Day 4: Lights
Lena smiled as she watching her girlfriend doing meditation. The room was dark except the candles Veronica lit before she began her daily meditation routine. Most people would be afraid because of the number of candles Veronica used, but Lena trusted Ve would not burn down their place. And plus the young Luthor already installed the fire detector and everything.
Lena tried to meditate too with Veronica, but then she couldn’t focus because there were just too many voices inside her head and she doesn’t know how to silence them or heck, just to keep the volume down. Veronica raised her eyebrow at this and said that’s why she meditates, to clear her head from those voices. Lena just smiled and apologized to her girlfriend, saying that maybe meditation was not her thing, and yoga.
Yeah, Lena tried yoga once as well because Veronica was doing it and she wanted them to do something together. Back when they were they just got together. But then it ended up with Lena broke her ankle because she couldn’t stop staring at Veronica doing those poses. At the end, Sam became Veronica’s yoga buddy. The three of them, along with Gayle, Sam’s fiancée, were friends back when they were still at the boarding school. They went their separate way after graduation, and then they met again on Paramore concert a few years ago.
“You know you could join me anytime, right?” Veronica’s voice pulled Lena back into the real world.
The young Luthor smiled and walked towards Veronica. “I know, but it’s more fun to watch,” she whispered as she sat down Indian-style next her girlfriend.
Veronica smiled and turned her body so that she was facing Lena. And then she raised her eyebrow when she saw Lena was holding a really big box. “What’s that?”
“Remember when you told me that you hear rumors about the whereabouts of the Kusanagi sword?” Lena smiled widely when she saw how Veronica’s eyes widened at the mention of Kusanagi.
Collecting swords and knives was Veronica’s hobby. Their apartment’s decorations were 70% Veronica’s swords collection, while the rest were painting Lena bought from here and there. You could actually use the swords of knifes, it proofed effective when someone tried to kill the young Luthor, Veronica just grabbed one of the display swords and use it. Veronica always cleaned the swords every day after she got home from her work as a crime scene cleanup.
“Well,” Lena cleared her throat. “I happened to find out that the rumors are real…”
Veronica gasped loudly when she saw the sword inside the wooden box. “Wait, how? I thought…”
Lena laughed. “Trust me, it wasn’t easy. But then I want to do this right…”
Veronica stopped herself from touching the sword. “What?”
Lena took Veronica’s right hand and smiled softly, her eyes were watery. “From the very first moment I laid eyes on you, I know we’re going to have a connection. But at that time, I didn’t know what.”
Veronica opened her mouth when she realized where this was going but then decided to stay quiet and let Lena continue.
“I was a coward, for not telling you my feeling sooner and then we’re graduated and went our own ways,” Lena pretended to laugh to hide her sniffle. “And I was devastated because I thought that was the last time we would see each other again. Until seven years ago, when we’ve met at Paramore’s concert.”
Both of them laughed.
“These last seven years was the most,” Lena took a deep breath. “Amazing years I ever had. I learned a lot from you, all those adventures, those silly moments, those fights we had,” Lena smiled sadly. They had their differences, sometimes they could tolerate it but sometimes it made them fought. “And of course those amazing, earth-shattering sex,” Lena winked or tried to. There go all those scenarios she made in her head. Yeah, might just go with the flow now.
“Only the best from the best for the best,” Veronica said smugly.
“I want more of it,” Lena said shakily.
“What? The sex?”
Lena laughed while Veronica snickered. “You asshole! I’m trying to propose you!” Lena punched Veronica’s shoulder lightly.
“Well go on then, continue,” Veronica said.
Lena cleared her throat. “I know you hate jewelry, and I want to do something special for you. Because you’ve done so much for me and–“ Lena hummed in delight as Veronica kissed her softly. “Not that I don’t mind, but why?” She asked after Veronica released the kiss.
The older woman smiled tenderly and touched Lena’s left cheek, the soft glow from the candles made Veronica’s strong bone structure looks softer. “You’ve done so much for me as well, Lena,” Veronica whispered softly.
“We’ve done so much to each other,” when Veronica opened her mouth, Lena yelled. “Don’t make any sex joke!”
Veronica laughed. “I think you haven’t finished your question yet.”
“Well yes,” Lena said sternly. “As I said before I was interrupted, I want to do something special for this special moment. So Veronica Sinclair,” she took the sword with both hands and presented it to Veronica. “Will you accept this sword and become my wife?”
Veronica tried to hide her real emotions when she heard Lena asked her to marry her. Instead, she pretended to be annoyed and then she tsked. “I was actually planning to do that.”
Lena blinked few times. “What?”
“I was planning to purpose to you today,” Veronica rolled her eyes. “Stand up.”
“What?” Lena said again dumbly.
Veronica rolled her eyes again. “I put the box under the dojo floor.”
So Lena put the sword back carefully and stood up. Veronica touched the space Lena just sat on and then there was a ‘click’ sound before the floor opens up and revealing a small space. Within that space was a red box. Slowly Veronica took the box and closed it again.
“What’s that?” Now it was Lena’s turn to ask.
“Remember that one night when we were watching your favorite baking show,” Lena nodded. “And then you said how awesome it would be if you could know their favorite recipe?”
The young Luthor’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. “No wayyyy,” Lena squealed.
Veronica smiled and open the box, there was a giant black book inside the box with the words ‘Bake off’ written with golden ink and curvy handwriting. “This book contains the bakers from all season and also the judges’ favorite recipes, with their photo and signature and few bits of advice for you.”
Lena squealed with glee. “No fucking way.”
Veronica laughed once. “Each of them even made a short video for you about, well, everything,” the older woman cleared her throat. “But mostly about our relationship.”
Lena’s heart skipped a beat. Veronica rarely talked about their relationship; the older woman prefers to show it rather than telling people. So for her to talk about it to absolute strangers that she only knew from television was something. “What did you tell them?”
“That I want to purpose to my girlfriend of four years and I want to give her the best,” Veronica put down the book back inside the box in order to touch Lena’s hand. “And she loves baking even though I don’t like sweet, but I want to give her a book with your favorite recipe in it.”
Lena bumped their forehead together. “And they said romance is dead,” she said before she kissed Veronica softly.
“Although I told them that I don’t need to eat sweet because I already eat you,” Veronica said smugly after their kiss.
“This fucking asshole,” Lena laughed loudly, but then she said “Ask me,” in a hushed tone.
“Lena Lutessa Luthor,” Veronica took the book again. “Will you accept this book and become my wife?”
The young Luthor smiled widely and nodded her head. “Yes. Absolutely yes!” Before she kisses Veronica, Lena asked. “Wait, you haven’t answered my question yet!”
Veronica rolled her eyes and sighed. “I thought with me purposing you is a clear answer that I want to marry you.”
“Say the word,” Lena said softly.
“Yes,” Veronica said with half smile on her face. “I will marry you, Lena. But I think we still need to buy a ring. No matter how cool it is for me to carry the Kusanagi everywhere, we still need a ring.”
“But you…”
A slender finger was suddenly in front of her lips. “You are the only exception.”
“I can’t believe you just quote Paramore’s song title on me!”
Both of them laughed. After their laughter died down they were looking at each other shyly. No one knew who moved first, but the next thing they knew…
They kissed.
