day 51 :: the hostel we are staying at tonight is run by a monastery, famous for its singing nuns. pat and elise are somewhat nervous around nuns, and the group dinner they are making isn't being served until 9pm so we opted out of the group time and went to explore the city for a bit. there are lots of stores specializing in pilgrim’s needs, which is great because mike’s knee is not doing well so we are looking into having his bag carried onward to reduce the stress on his knee. a nice camino friend of ours, jules, has lent him her walking poles which is helping a lot.

we are getting pretty sick of the pilgrim’s menu’s - they are mass produced and tend to offer the same options at each place. we went to try a local restaurant, which was nice - we ran into ken and tom, an american father and son i met in roncevalles, it was nice to see them again. after dinner we brought some sangria down by the river’s edge and watched as some people braved the cold water and rocky river bed. we came back to the hostel to hang out, do laundry, and use the internet to talk with our loved ones back home. the nun’s group meeting was just getting started, we stayed out since we didn’t have anything to contribute, plus we were hoping the internet would be strong while everyone else was occupied - wifi is a hot commodity these days. we met a few other pilgrim’s: michelle, a mid-twenties canadian teacher whom we had been hearing about from other pilgrim’s since she and elise share a nationality. we also met two nice women from kansas who are currently stuck in carrion due to massive blisters on the bottom of one of their feet. blisters and feet - in fact almost all body issues are now open topics among pilgrims. there is a recent post-grad from miami who seems to be struggling with some nasty blood blisters - everyone is kind of offering him help - especially the nuns and priest who are somewhat of experts in the matter. there are so many blister treatments offered around the hostels because the issue is such a struggle for so many pilgrims. elise even has to treat her feet morning and night. pat somehow hasn’t had a single issue, so we’ve started joking that he’s do for a big one. the familiarity and fellowship occurring here among basic strangers is beautiful.

Dominique-inique-inique

Anyone who follows me on Twitter (woo!) knows I recently watched all six seasons of American Horror Story in swift succession. Season two (Asylum) is still my favorite of the bunch due largely to the inclusion of the song “Dominique” by Soeur Sourire. It’s featured in almost all of the scenes that take place in the common room, and it kind of make you feel like you’re going crazy yourself due to the repetitive nature of the refrain (see below). 

I was just going to leave it at that since the video of the singing nuns in black and white was just so perfect, but then I found this...

Apparently, Soeur Sourire (real name Jeanine Deckers, Belgian nun) also recorded a disco version of her smash hit in 1982. I’m not sure if this is just laid over existing video footage or if she really officially released a video for the disco version-- either way, it’s an absolute gem. I haven’t done much (read: any) research into her or her life, but a brief glance at the comments (dangerous, I know) mentioned something about her having a tragic end after being forced to leave the cloth. I’ll do more research on that later, but in the meantime, enjoy both versions of this awesome song.
