🔹️SINtober -22-
Whoopsies! I got side tracked with a personal issue so have some SIN DT anatomy studies. ☺️
Again, I can’t actually claim to have produced this in direct response to the prompt, but this is a recent piece of my work depicting, for the trigger “sword lore” the Bodhisattva Manjushri, the Soft Voiced Prince, who is the personification of enlightened wisdom and clarity. His blazing sword is not a weapon but the razor of sudden realisation of the nature of reality that slices through delusion and severs suffering at the root. He is also regarded in Mahayana countries as the protector of artists so I already love Him anyway. This is a linocut printed on raw paper or over gold snd orange spray paint #sintober2022 #sintober22 #sineateruk #drawingchallenge #bodhisattva #manjushri #manjugosha #arapachana #swordofwisdom #blindingclarity #enlightenment #endofsuffering https://www.instagram.com/p/CjQ3kWrs6jZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
This set are echoes in my work of a peasants revolt after the trigger for today proposed by @sineateruk for the October drawing challenge (of which I have been an inconstant companion) and are tributes to several radical and antiestablishment groups from history. One, two and three are combinations of the three prints as black on red. Four is an early version of the sabotage idea. Five, six and seven are the Luddites smashing the machines, Gerard Winstanley’s clog pushing his spade into reclaimed common land and the wooden sabot being thrown into spinning machines to destroy them- (hence our term sabotage), these men and women alongside suffragettes, Tolpuddle Martyrs, Outrage and now Enough is Enough, Just Stop Oil and EX are worthy (along with many others not yet named here) of commemoration and honour. Sometimes, the people say no. #sintober22 #sintober2022 #drawingchallenge #linocut #illustration #peasantsrevolt #luddite #diggers #wigandiggersfestival #sabotage #sabot #saboteurs #saboteur #gerardwinstanley (at The Georgian Quarter) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkGloTtMG_X/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
As an answer to the Green Man I showed yesterday this was another digital collage of his more kindly brother John Barleycorn. Rather than the slightly frightening personification of the wild wood, (indifferent to our survival,) John Barleycorn is the face of the cycle of agriculture - on which our post hunter-gatherer society depends. The song tells of how he is treated dreadfully going through all the processes of threshing, binding, cutting and grinding that turn barley, wheat and corn into our sustenance. After all the sacrifice of the barbarous abuses he suffers, he then returns “the stronger man at last” in the form of that on which we rely. His body is made into bread and his blood into strong alcohol ( familiar?) as the spirit of cyclic life and death of harvest and agriculture like a British pagan Christ archetype. What’s not to love about John Barleycorn? #sintober2022 #pagan #archetypes #folksong #sintober22 #johnbarleycornmustdie #johnbarleycorn #digitalcollage #sineateruk #drawingchallenge #thegreenman #naturespirit #eucharist #parallel #oldgods (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjvr3SAsdBW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
between archiving old sketchbooks I thought I’d join in with this sineater drawing challenge based on a set of folk prompts through October/ (thanks @sineateruk for this inclusive game). I’ve often returned to images of the Green Man and this is a chance to gather a few together. The first is a digital collage playing on the idea that He may be a personification of the sensation of being out in nature and vulnerable. We may feel we are being watched from the undergrowth or stalked and hunted if we are away from other humans or safer places. We were not always top of the food chain and our DNA remembers that on some haunted level. I don’t necessarily always see the Green Man as a very comforting figure. The 2nd-5th images are off a collagraph off his face made from Druid inspired leaves like oak snd elder- I didn’t want anything that arrived here after the Romans so I found these growing around the studio. 6,7 and 8 are pulls off my very first link print from many years ago. 9 is the very beautiful Nick Frost being a final digital collage of the Green Man #sintober2022 #inkdrawing #mixedmedia #confrontation #sintober22 #collograph #collographprint #digitalcollage #sineateruk #drawingchallenge #thegreenman #naturespirit #hernethehunter https://www.instagram.com/p/CjtM2dbMKWS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
This was my stained glass window of Boudicca for @earthmovesprojects at their site near Wallasey Village. The standing figure went over the edge of the glass onto the frame and she stands in the face of a fallen Roman Legionary. She has red hair and woad face paint (and, like much of my work she has a halo). She comes much more into her own with the sun showing through her. She lives there now alongside Medusa and Belisama - the Romano Celtic goddess of the Mersey and Ribble #sintober2022 #sintober22 #drawingchallenge #boudicca #boudecia #boadeciathevictorious #boadica #stainedglass #earthmoves #icini (at New Brighton, Wirral, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjnpzZpMnFd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Ongoing but unavoidably slippery responses to #sintober22 trigger was “Fox and Hounds”. I’m in late from work ( again) so had no time to make a new drawing today but this was a print from last year called “Bold Reynard”. It’s a response to the folk song of that name by the excellent @folkieben which tells of the lost and previously noble fox king who is reduced to living off scraps of rubbish in alleyways and “sips the morning dew no more”. It’s a tragedy and an allegory of everything we have lost over recent years. Ben is currently touring with mighty #gracepetrie - go and see them #sintober22 #sintober2022 #drawingchallenge #linocut #illustration #benmoss #lostlands #austerity #loss #urbanfox #boldreynard (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjWQclBMA6h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
I haven’t posted on this page for a while but as a diversion between archiving old sketchbooks I thought I’d join in with this sineater drawing challenge based on a set of folk prompts through October/ (thanks @sineateruk for this inclusive game ). I was encouraged, (nay provoked!), by my friend and fellow artist @spells_against_civilisation to play along. I’m desperately short for time with my workload so I may not manage every day and many of these will be echoes of old work but this is a new drawing (of about 40 minutes last night with acrylic, ink, tombo and carandache) depicting the imagined moment of horror and realisation of Sir Gawain in realising he should not have accepted the challenge #sintober2022 #inkdrawing #mixedmedia #confrontation #sintober22 #beheaded #horror #authurianlegend #collograph #collographprint #greenknight #sineateruk #drawingchallenge (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjNdSQhMBAd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
