Summary: Y/N is in love with Sirius but never acts upon it sticking to her role as best friend until James gets drunk and makes them play a game.
A/N: Okay so I never explained how the game chicken works it’s pretty self explanatory but basically two people lean in until either they kiss or one pulls away.
Gryffindor had won the quidditch cup and they would be damned if the whole castle didn’t know about it. The best way to gloat their success, was a party held in the common room.
Y/N didn’t feel much like partying. She would much rather sit by the black lake, her marauders in tow, Sirius sitting next to her while the other boys tried to jump in the lake. The wind blowing over her as she laid down, feeling the ground underneath her; solid and real just like the boy that would be sitting next to her. The girl was snapped out of her thoughts quite literally by James’s fat fingers in her face. She gave him a blank face informing him that she hadn’t been listening.
“I said you’re going to the party right? To support your favorite quidditch player?” He flashed her a charming smile, puppy dog eyes along with them. How could she say no to him? James was so proud of the win, and she was proud of James. Her reply was on the tip of her tongue when Sirius Black slid onto the bench next to her, swiping a roll off the table before taking a bite.
“Your favorite marauder will be there, sweetheart.” He spoke, mouth full of bread making his words come out choked and uneven.
Without missing a beat the witty girl turned to Remus smiling. “Rem you’re going tonight?” Remus smirked, not looking up from his eggs.
“Nice try princess, we all know you like me the best.” Sirius said pulling her in for a hug, bread roll hanging out of his mouth giving him access to wrap both his arms around her frame. She nuzzled her head against his chest. This was her attempt to hug back with her arms pinned down by his.
“I wouldn’t miss it, James.” She said once Sirius had let go. She stared at him, watching his jaw tense everytime he took a bit out of the roll, ocassionally stopping to say something stupid before returning to the bread.
Oh how she wished it wasn’t true, but it was. Sirius was her favorite everything; marauder, boy, person. She loved Sirius Black with every piece of her.
The common room was decorated in red and gold; everything screaming Gryffindor. The party was in full swing as Y/N walked down the stairs from her dorm. She had spent too much time on her outfit, missing the first hour of the party. James was quick to approach her, stumbling up the first stair. He was already tipsy, but he deserved it, so the girl pushed down her mother-like instincts.
“Hello James.” She said as his smile somehow grew bigger.
“Y/N, brilliant we are playing a game and needed another girl.” He grabbed the girls wrist, not asking if she really wanted to play.
“James let me get a drink first.” James whined, but stopped by the table of drinks. He let her pour a fire whiskey before continuing to drag her towards the group of people in the middle of the common room.
Y/N spotted Sirius immediately out of the circle. He sat on the couch talking to a blonde fifth year, drink lazily hanging from the hand that laid behind her head. Y/N finished her drink in one sip, liking the burn that it brought her.
“Okay James, what is this game anyways?” She asked looking at the bottom of her red plastic cup.
“Oh it’s a muggle game called chicken.” Y/N stomach turned she’d heard of this game and had no interest in playing. Turning around, she headed straight for the drink table. She filled her cup up the brim with some brown liquid and took a couple swings. She refilled it once more to the top before heading back over to James. If she was going to play this game she at least wanted to be tipsy.
James had just finished explaining the game to people when Y/N joined the group. Sirius had removed himself from the couch and the blonde now standing in the center of the circle next to James. Sirius smirked as Y/N arrived rolling his eyes at the rules of the game.
“Alright,” James let out a hiccup “Michael, you and,” he looked around the room before landing on a third year Ravenclaw, “Valerie.” Jame clapped a hand on each of their shoulders moving them so they were standing face to face a good distance between them.
Valerie ended up backing away at the last second, sending laughter throughout the common room. James handed the girl her losing shot before quickly plucking another couple from thin air, two sixth years Y/N didn’t recognize.
Two more couples had gone only one of them ended up kissing. She had to admit it was kinda fun watching the squeamish strangers back away from each other. She had finished her third drink, giving her the tipsiness she so desired.
“Alright James, my turn.” She wanted in on the stupid game, growing bored of watching from the sidelines. James stumbled his way towards her using her shoulder to keep himself up, he too had been drinking while commentating the game.
“Alright Y/L/N, who shall I pick for you?” Y/N watched unnerved as James’s eyes scanned the crowd of people, until his eyes landed on Sirius. He wiggled his brows at her, a smug grin shining.
“Sirius.” Y/N’s heart jumped in her throat, but only for a moment, the alcohol quickly consuming her thoughts. What could go wrong? The worst being one of them would backing away. She was still going to kill James when he was sober enough to care, but she would play the game.
Sirius’s eyes jumped toward James, not expecting his name to be called. He looked over at his drunk friend wondering how in the hell he was even standing up and also how to kill him.
“No, this is a bad idea.” Sirius said, Y/N smirked at him, the alcohol taking over. She walked towards the long haired boy. The tips of their shoes now pressed together.
“What are you a chicken, Sirius?” The girl asked, edging dangerously close to him, watching him back away slightly.
“Just don’t want you falling in love princess. Can’t have you running back begging for more.” Sirius said, his famous cocky grin returning to his face. He finally leaned closer to the girl. Their noses now resting on each other.
“Wouldn’t dream of it Black.” Their lips met, the common room went silent. Neither participant moved as their lips pressed against each other, they were simply just connected.
Y/N couldn’t believe it, Sirius had actually committed to the stupid little game and was kissing her. Well not really kissing, their lips pressed together. She liked the feeling of it though. The pressure of his lips against hers. A heavy reminder that he was there, standing close to her, touching her.
She pulled away knowing she would miss that pressure for the rest of her life. Sirius was quick to pull his hand up. He cupped her jaw, running his thumb over her lips. Y/N stared at his hand in amazement, before looking up at his gray eyes. The center of them dark.
“This isn’t part of the game, Sirius.” Y/N whispered.
“Screw the game, princess. Want to show you a proper kiss.” Sirius moved in again, tilting his head to the left this time. Y/N closed her eyes. His lips were back on hers, parting them. Her hand ran up his arm leaving it to rest on his elbow. He pushed her back against the stone wall, the crowd quickly averting their eyes to anywhere, but the couple making out.
The girl pulled back once again placing her forehead against his, looking into his now blown out pupils. His hand slid underneath her shirt. The contrast of his cold hand against her warm skin made her jump. Sirius chuckled. She closed her eyes, wanting to be this close to him always. Y/N would crave this; his eyes looking at her like she was everything, his cold hand against her warm skin, Sirius being here with her. It was too much. She couldn’t do this now and than go back to just being his dumb best friend. She couldn’t know what he felt like and go back to watching him feel others girls. These thoughts made her pull away, removing his hand from her stomach. His eyes shining his confusion and hurt.
“Hey what’s wrong love?” Sirius tried to place his hand on her again, but pulled away when he saw the brim of tears in her eyes.
“I don’t want to play anymore.” Her voice cracking, but only slightly before pulling herself together. She fought back the tears and turned to walk away.
“Play? Play what?” Sirius mumbled looking down at his feet not noticing the girl was slipping away. Y/N pushed through the groups of students, desperately trying to get to her dorm. She wanted nothing more than to sleep until images of Sirius were out of her head.
Her foot was right above the first stair leading to the girls dormitory when a large hand grabbed her wrist pulling her backwards. Sirius stood in front of her, hair messier than when she had left him.
“I-I wasn’t playing, that game was stupid and I wasn’t playing. I wanted to kiss you. Always have. I’m not very good with my words, you should know that princess. You’ve watched me muck stuff up all the time just because I can’t speak. But the point is I like you and I want to kiss you all the time, not just for some stupid game.” Sirius rushed out, barely stopping to breathe as he spoke. He painted slowly, praying that his words were the right ones.
“I, um, I don’t,” Y/N was at a loss or words. There were thousands of things she wanted to say, but none of them felt right. So all said was, “Okay.” Sirius looked up at her with hope and still a bit of confusion.
“Okay as in, okay I am sorry I don’t feel the same or an okay, please take me up to my dorm. Need a little more from you princess.”
“Okay, you can take me to Hogsmeade Sunday and than up to my dorm.” Sirius smiled up at her knowing she was going to be a girl he would have to work for, but oh boy was he willing to put in the work.
