ITEM-011 "Image Manifestation Device"
---OFFICIAL F.E.R.N.E. COMPANY ITEM DOCUMENTATION---
Categorization Security Code: Level 1 / Eithwaz / Yellow
Object Type: Artefact / Thoughtless
ITEM Description: ITEM-011 is a handheld device vaguely resembling a scanner, measuring about 310mm x 120mm x 52mm with a flat screen and buttons on the sides. It has an array of ports for different types of entrances, as well as one to insert CDs or floppy disks. ITEM-011 cannot be turned on by itself, and must first have another device connect to it through a port, or have it inserted into it directly in the case of a USB, CD or floppy. ITEM-011 will boot up and show a display. Using the buttons to the right, one can navigate a gallery of every image file in the device. It supports about any file type, as long as it can be displayed as a still image, for this purpose it seems GIF files are supported as long as they do not have any form of movement. Two other buttons on the other side of the device can be used to select, or backtrack, they are also used as “cancel” and “confirm” buttons.
When inserting or connecting ITEM-011 into any device or digital storage containing a compatible image file, ITEM-011 will turn on and boot up a rudimentary gallery that allows to view every image stored using the simple left and right controls, and looping when the end is reached. In case that there are images in multiple folders, the images will be displayed in order according to the first folder in alphabetic older, which applies to sub folders, the image files themselves also appear in alphabetic order. The "cancel" and "confirm" buttons function as forwards and back. When pressing "confirm" over any displayed image, a text box will appear with the options to confirm or cancel selection, pressing "cancel" will bring the user back to the gallery, while confirming the option will start ITEM-011's anomalous process. There is no known way to stop it once it begins.
Once an image has been selected, ITEM-011 will begin processing the image, which takes between a few seconds and up to 6 minutes depending on the dimensions of the image, resolution, metadata and such. Once processing is over, ITEM-011 will begin creating a physical manifestation of the image, which lasts between a minute and up to half an hour depending on the file. As this is going on, the contents of the image will be materialized physically. Whatever is considered the focus of the image is a bit unknown, though it seems that the intent of whoever created the image (be it a digital drawing, photography or otherwise) intended to be the focus. ITEM-011 will not be able to replicate images that depict objects or people, such as landscapes, rooms and environments, though it is able to replicate specific parts of them if is the focus of the image, such as a specific door.
Addendum# 1 - Discovery: (23/06/2010). ITEM-011 was discovered on the possession of one MIguel █████ in Paraguay, who claims to have recieved it by email by an unknown contact, and had discovered its anomalous behaviors while fiddling with it and trying to understand what it even was. Miguel only managed to manifest small simple objects, and then was able to create a functional replica of the "Real Knife" item from a game, specifically a fan created design which proved to be quite deadly and destructive, which scared Miguel and led to him telling authorities who, eventually, contacted The Company.
Miguel was approached and ITEM-011 as well as the Real Knife replica (internally refereed to as "ITEM-011-a" for archival purposes) were confiscated without issue, and Miguel was given a cover story, paid therapy and ultimately was cooperative with The Company, and thus no amnesics were required.
Addendum# 2 - Notable Incident: (15/02/2013). During an experimentation session of ITEM-011's materialization capabilities, Dr. Dreamfurr, who was in charge of conducting the particular session of experiments, decided to connect her mobile device, which had been infected with a newly discovered anomaly, to ITEM-011 to test what would occur. The anomaly consisted of a strange mobile app that would download itself into a user's phone, by passing security checks, and overtime start sending modified images of locations the user had been to, with a strange, cadaver creature somewhere in it, with the pictures becoming more frequent over time and with the pictures being of places the user had been to recently, until the user began to perceive the entity within their field of vision.
As Dr. Dreamfurr's phone had only been recently infected and was still on the photography phase, she decided to plug her phone to ITEM-011 to test what would happen, selecting one of the images at random to process.
After the process finished, what initially seemed like a failure to produce results, Dr. Dreamfurr soon became startled, and on her account, she could perceive the entity that would manifest in the anomalous app's images, though with some distinct changes, such as having a much more humanoid figure, leaning on being distinctively feminine, and now being much clearer to see, such as fur details and other such features that were hard to distinguish on the images. The entity was able to interact with the researcher as if they were physically present, and unlike previous manifestations of the app anomaly, it was able to vocalize communication without trouble, and showcased intelligence on par of that of a person, and seemed to share knowledge possibly sourced from Dr. Dreamfurr's mind, though it seems capable of learn and think and have preferences for itself.
As it seems they are stuck together, the entity has been allowed to dub itself their own name, "Julia", addressed as "Dr. Julia" formally, and "hired" as Dr. Dreamfurr's personal assistant. After this incident, no more instances of the anomalous app have taken place.
