Public Wine Project

ジョージアの位置するコーカサス地方は、世界最古級のワイン生産地の一つとされ、その起源は紀元前6千年紀（約前6000〜5800年）に遡ると考えられています。

9月、ジョージアの首都トビリシには葡萄の好い香りが漂っています。街角で、高台で、路地裏で広場で、まるで街全体が葡萄の木に包まれているかのように、街のいたるところで豊かな葡萄の房が揺れています。

伝統的にジョージアでは、葡萄は秋の収穫の後に自家製ワインとして醸造されます。またその木の枝は肉を焼く際の燃料として使用され、その葉はミンチ肉を包んで食べる食材として使われます。2011年、はじめてジョージアを訪れた際に、わたしは街中に実るこの豊かな葡萄に、人々は葡萄と共に生活しているような印象を受けました。

「パブリック・ワイン・プロジェクト」と題した本プロジェクトでは、ボランティア・スタッフと共に、トビリシ市内の公共空間、あるいはプライベート・ガーデンから葡萄を集め、自家製ワインを醸造します。

醸造には、ワイン造りで有名な中央ジョージア、イメレティ地方のワイン農家に協力をお願いします。公共空間に実るこの野生の葡萄は、品種もバラバラで糖度も高すぎるため、通常ワイン造りには向いていません。しかし、パブリック・ワイン・プロジェクトは、「美味しい」自家製のワインを作るのではなく、「ワイン（あるいは葡萄）」というキーワードを通して、人々と伝統の関係性に着目することを目的としていました。

トビリシ市内から集めてきた葡萄から作られた25リットルの自家製ワインは、様々な風景が混じり合った「公共の味」を描き出します。プロジェクトのプロセスは「屋台」と題した木造のインスタレーション（ドキュメンテーション・ルーム）にて、醸造されたワインとともに展覧会期間中に展示されました。木造の「屋台」は「プログレス・インスタレーション」と称し、続く年以降の改善を目指しています。

The Caucasus region, where Georgia is located, is considered one of the oldest sites of wine production in the world. It can be traced back to the 6th millennium BC (c. 6000–5800 BC).

In September the air in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia is fragrant with the scent of grapes. From the street corners to the hills, the back alleys and the courtyard, it was as if the whole city was swaddled in grape vines, everywhere you looked fat bunches of grapes gently swung from vines.

My first experience of visiting Georgia was in late October 2011 when many grape vines were bearing fruit. During my stay in Tbilisi, I discovered a great number of grapes growing in public areas and got the impression that people really live among grapes. Homemade wine is brewed after the harvest in autumn, the tree branches are used as fuel at barbecues, and the vines and leaves are also used as traditional ingredients to wrap minced meat.

I decided to produce homemade wine from these grapes that were collected from Tbilisi’s public areas and private gardens.

The Public Wine Project, with the help of volunteers collects grapes from around the public and private space in Tbilisi to make home-style wine. The wine is made with the cooperation of local wine farmers in the Imereti region in central Georgia which is famous for its wineries.

The wine is made from a mixture of varieties that come from different parts of Tbilisi, thus trying to represent the public space through taste. The Public Wine Project’s aim is not to produce home-made wine, but focus on the people’s relationship with tradition through wine (or grapes).

In the first year, I produced 25 liters of homemade wine and created the skeleton of the movable wooden stall. I call this wooden construction a “progress installation” with the intention of improving it in the following years.

According to Thai belief, having your hair cut on a Wednesday is asking for bad luck.

Traditionally, a different image of Buddha is assigned to each day of the week, which people can call their own guardian Buddha. Yet, Wednesday stands out because it is the only day to be divided into morning and evening, each with its own Buddha image.

The Wednesday morning Lord Buddha is standing with both hands holding an alms bowl, whereas the Wednesday evening Lord Buddha is receiving the gift of a honeycomb from a monkey and water from an elephant.

But why is Wednesday relevant? What are people doing on Wednesday? From this simple question, "Wednesday" became an art project.

水曜日に髪を切るのは縁起が悪い、タイの言い伝えではそう云われています。

一週間の毎日に、曜日を守護する仏陀のイメージを伝える文化圏において、水曜日は午前と午後にそれぞれ違った仏陀のイメージを持つ、少し変わった一日です。

水曜の朝、仏陀は両方の手で托鉢の鉢を持ち立っています。水曜の夜、仏陀は象から水を、猿からハチの巣を受け取っています。一週間の内水曜日だけが、二つの異なった仏陀のイメージを持っています。

しかし何故水曜日なのでしょう?　こんな素朴な疑問から、"水曜日"は今アートプロジェクトになりました。

「あなたの撮った水曜日の写真を送ってください。」

2008年、チェンマイを拠点に、私は人々の水曜日に撮られた写真を募集するプロジェクトを行いました。6週間の募集期間中に、プロの写真家から小学生、旅行客から現地の少数民族まで、様々に異なる542枚の水曜日の写真が寄せられました。

これらの、人々のユニークな水曜日のを写した写真は一同に、チェンマイのギャラリーにて展示されました。

基本構想自然の森の中における人為的な森の再構成。

出発点もっともありふれていて、もっとも奇異なものとは何か？

展開 01: 着想日々の生活の要求からのみ、ここでは人為的な作業が行われているように感じられました。この印象からわたしは、完全に無目的で無意味で、不必要な作業を行うことにしました。すなわちわたしは、森の中に森を作ることを思い浮かべました。

展開 02: 形態自然の森は既にダイナミックで奇跡的な構造をしています。このアブストラクトな印象と作品との間に、明確な視覚的差異をつけるにはどうすればよいか、わたしはもっと人工的で、単純で整然とした形態を使用することを考えました。

展開 03: 色調村近くの仏教寺院に何度か訪れる機会がありました。タイ仏教のお寺は森の中にあり、とても異質で、太陽光を受け眩しく煌いていました。この印象からわたしは大きなインスピレーションを得ました。

The 5 steps to developing the Bamboo Pyramid.

Basic Concept. Reconstruction of an artificial forest within a natural forest.

Starting point. What is the most usual and unusual image on the site?

Development 01: Idea. Only from the demands of daily life, it seemed to me that artificial work was being done here. From this impression, I decided to perform a completely purposeless, meaningless, and unnecessary task. In other words, I contemplated the creation of a forest within a forest.

Development 02: Form. The natural forest is already a dynamic and miraculous structure. In order to create a clear visual difference between this abstract impression and the work, I thought of using a more artificial, simple, and orderly form.

Development 03: Color. I had several opportunities to visit a Buddhist temple near the village. The Thai Buddhist temple was in the middle of a forest, very different, and shone brightly in the sunlight. I was greatly inspired by this impression.

【路上にて】イスタンブールで最も歴史深いカディキョイ地区、週末ともなれば多くの酔客でごったがえすバーの並ぶ飲屋街、カディフェストリートの一角に、使われなくなったまま長く放置された青いフォルクスワーゲンがありました。2005年4月、サイトスペシフィックアートワーク、 "silkworm" は、このフォルクスワーゲンに寄生するような形で行われました。多くの人々が日々行き交う通りでありながらも、まるで忘れ去られたように放置されたフォルクスワーゲンは、古い町並みに影を落としながら、「時間」という実体のない流れを行き交う人々の生活を不思議に象徴しているようでもありました。

【無意識の存在を意識の舞台へ】 "Progress Installation" と名付けられた10日間の作業を通して、私たちはここに小さな「繭(cocoon)」を誕生させます。繭の持つイメージは「生まれ変る為の準備段階、抱擁、活性」。この為に素材には柔らかなイメージを持つ毛糸が選ばれました。引けば千切れるような繊細な糸は、何十、何百にも巻きつけられることで肌理細やかな塊へと変わります。

【物事は生まれた瞬間に死に始める】毎晩9時から10時まで1時間だけ行われた作業によって、青いフォルクスワーゲンは次第に白く埋もれて行きました。日々の風景は日々を追うごとに「当たり前」の風景へと変わります。夜になると毎晩、少しだけ新しい風景が通りの片隅に現れました。当初は訳の判らない作業に戸惑っていた住民や酔客も、「作業中である」という新しい風景に次第に馴染み、珍しくもまた当然のような行為として眺め始めました。アートという最も「非日常的」な行為が、「日常」へと変わる瞬間です。

【再び路上で】最終日、人通りの絶えた明方の路上で、アウトドアインスタレーション "silkworm" は、その真白な繭を完成させました。その姿は変化を待つ「準備段階」のイメージであると同時に、人々に忘れ去られた錆びた廃車に脚光を浴びせる、象徴的な「抱擁」でもありました。しかしそれはまた、最も活性的である「プログレスの終り」でもあります。飲屋街の一角に誕生した一個の白い車型の繭、非日常的なイメージも完成してしまえば再び風景と化し、すでにそこにあるひとつの装置として「時間」という実体のない創造の中へと帰って行きます。

今日、わたし達の発展した社会を見渡した際、わたし達は競い合いながら物事を大げさにすることに慣れ、日々ますますそのように加速してゆくようにも見えます。しかし今一度、自身の周囲を等身大の世界として眺めた場合、例えば静かな泉の表面を打つ水の一滴は、その様相をすっかり変えてしまう程の充分な力を持っているのかもしれません。

カジノの町マカオの豪華な噴水は、もっと目立つように、もっと壮大であるようにと、日々競い合っているように見えます。しかし、人々の生活が密集する住宅街で、路地裏の上空に干された洗濯物から、或はクーラーの室外機から飛んで来た一滴の水の雫がわたしの首筋にあたった時、それは盛大な作り物の水芸よりも、わたしの思考を変化させるのに十分な驚きを持っていました。

本作は愉快な楽しみの何事をも提供しません。覗き込んだ水面に移るわずかな像が、繰り返し繰り返し、退屈に壊されてゆくばかりです。

ユートピア像水鏡に似たり－－明日がいつも今日より良いなら、その良さの意味は失われます。ひと雫の露から滝の咆哮を知る。水面に走る静かな波紋に、崩れる像に己を見つける。わたしはこれが最も肯定的な面の東洋思考だと考えています。

Today, when we look out over our modern society, it seems we all got used to exaggerating things competitively and are accelerating the situation. However, if you turn back to your human-size reality, a water drop tapping a calm pond is sometimes enough to change its images.

The lavish fountains of Macau, the city of casinos, seem to be in daily competition to be more prominent and more spectacular. However, when a water drop from hanged up laundries or an outdoor unit of air conditioners at a back alley in a residential area unexpectedly tapped my neck, I realized that such a small droplet was much more powerful to change my vision.

This work doesn't offer any pleasant enjoyment. Only reflected image on the surface repeatedly and tediously flickers.

The utopian vision is your own reflection. If tomorrow were always better than today, the meaning of "the better" would be lost. Imagine the roar of a waterfall from a droplet, and find oneself from a collapsing image in calm undulation, I trust that this is the most positive aspect of Oriental thought.

Balloon

"土地には落花生ときびが栽培され、河では貝を収獲していた蘭芝島が、急激なソウルの巨大都市化とともに1978年、ゴミの埋立地となりました。以来1993年までの15年間、生活ゴミや建設廃木材、産業廃棄物など約92百万㎥のゴミが埋めら、約90メートルの頂きのない二つのゴミの山となってしまいました。" [ Reference : Story of Nanjido ]

この蘭芝島での三ヶ月間のレジデンスプログラム参加中、わたしは生活から出る、個人的なゴミを集めていました。本作はこれらのゴミと風船によって構成されています。

ヘリウムガスで膨らんだ風船は、ゴミを何処かへ運び去るようなイメージを持っています。しかし、いっときは作品の素材でもあったこれらの風船もまた、展覧会の後半には浮力を失い、まるでゴミのように会場内に散らばります。

"Nanjido was converted into a landfill in the middle of the rapid urbanization of Seoul in 1978. From that time to 1993, 92 million tons of garbage including household wastes and construction and industrial wastes were dumped on the island, resulting in two massive mountains of garbage measuring over 90 meters in height." [ Reference : Story of Nanjido ]

During my three-month residency program on Nanji-Island, I have been collecting personal trash from my daily life. The installation is composed of those trash, and balloons.

The balloons, inflated with helium gas, seem to carry the trash away. However, they lost their buoyancy in the latter half of the exhibition, and the material that was once the material of an installation will scattere on the exhibition site like trash.

ウルシの木とオストラネーニエ

伝統的な漆農業において、漆掻きの職人たちは初夏から秋頃までをかけて、ウルシの木から「うるし」の原料を採取する。

――6月、漆掻き職人たちは山の神に手を合わせ、作業の無事と豊作を願い、ウルシの幹に傷を入れる。

夏の初めの頃には、切れ込みを入れても樹液は少ししか出てこない。しかし何度も作業を繰り返し、夏の盛りの頃にもなると、大量の樹液がウルシの木から溢れ出る。ウルシは落葉樹林なので秋には紅葉する。やがて採取シーズンの終わり、樹液の枯れたウルシの木は切り倒される。

伝統的な「瀬〆（セシメ）」と呼ばれる方法においては、切り倒した木の枝を集めて、枝の先からもうるしが採られた。これは仕事の少なかった冬場の内職のようなもので、取れ高が少ないことから毎年かならず行われるというものではなく、漆産業が低迷している近年では特に「セシメ」まで行われるケースは珍しい。セシメで取れた漆は「瀬〆漆」と呼ばれ粘度が高く、素材としても別に取り扱われる。

ウルシの木は樹液を採られ切り倒されるが、根は死んでいない。翌年には蘖(ひこばえ) [*1] が伸びて再生する。そしてまたうるしが採れるほどの木に成長するには、それから10年以上の歳月を要するのである。

消費者主義社会に破綻が見えてきて、このままでは地球資源が保たないということがいよいよわかってきた今日、一説によればわたしたちは、1970年頃にまで消費の速度を落とさなければならないという。つまりわたしたちの現代は、過去の生活様式に未来の社会構造のヒントを求めるようになってきている。

伝統的な漆農業において、ウルシの木からは樹液の最後の一滴までが搾り採られるが、後にまた木が再生するように木そのものを最後まで抹消してしまわない。森という生命に寄り添ったようなその生活様式には、なにか今後のわたしたちの社会を考えるためのヒントが隠されているのではないだろうか。

◉ 作品 «漆塗りのウルシの木»

漆掻きシーズンの終わり、樹液を搾り取られたウルシの木の枝は破棄される。この木の枝に、加工品としての「漆」を塗って作品としたのが «漆塗りのウルシの枝»（2021）である。

また、この作品の発展形であり、2021年から10年をかけて制作を予定されているのが «漆塗りのウルシの木» である。「うるしプロジェクト」では、2021年より、京都府福知山市で漆掻きの取材を行ってきた。作品 «漆塗りのウルシの木» は、この間に撮影を続け、2021年末に伐採されたウルシの木に、漆を塗って保存（作品化）するものである。

ウルシの木に漆を塗る。それは一見すると、とても無意味なことのように思える。

――なぜ無意味なのか?

それは「漆は美しさを助長する、高級なものへと昇華するために使われる」といった、一般認識が存在するからではないだろうか。

「見慣れたもの」を「見知らぬもの」に変えるのは、アートのひとつの作用である。言葉は使い続けると日常化し、やがて意味が滑り落ち、「自動機械化」してしまう。これを指し、古代ギリシャ人は「ドクサ」と呼んだ。「漆は美しさを助長する、高級なものへと昇華する」という思考が凝結すると、素材に対するイメージは「ドクサ化」する。わたしたちは実物を見る前から、「漆=美（あるいは美しいものに塗られている）」という思い込みを、無意識に作り上げてはいないだろうか。

一方で、ロシア・アヴァンギャルドのシクロフスキー（Viktor Borisovich Shklovskiy）らによって確立された概念「オストラネーニエ（異化作用 / Defamiliarization）」とは、ものを再・非日常化させることを指す。

作品 «漆塗りのウルシの木» は、原材料としての「うるし」を抽出され、本来は破棄されるはずであった「ウルシの木」に、人が手を加えて精製し、高価な素材となった「漆」を塗料として使用するというものである。無意味なもの、飾り立てても仕方のないものに高級塗料を使用する意味とは？ましてやそれが、素材を抽出した原材料であるとすれば？行為は必然、「ウルシからうるしを抽出する意味」に働きかける。人はなぜ手間をかけて「ウルシ」から「うるし」を抽出するのか？

当然だが、一本のウルシの木を「漆」で完全に保護するには、その木から採れたうるしだけでは到底賄いきれない。これは、一個人の消費するエネルギー量が、必ずしもその個人が生産するエネルギー量とは一致しない、資本主義経済の中で消費者生活を送る、わたしたちの姿にも似る。

作品 «漆塗りのウルシの木» は、自己に対する漆黒の問いと矛盾を内包しながら、物質社会の価値転換を思考する、プロジェクトのアイコンとして機能するのである。

Urushi trees and Ostranenie

In traditional lacquer harvesting, urushi-kaki (漆掻き) or lacquer tappers collect the raw material for “urushi” (うるし) from the urushi (ウルシ) trees from early summer to fall.

—In June, the lacquer tappers put their hands together to pray to the mountain gods for a safe and good harvest and cut notches in the trunks of the urushi trees.

At the beginning of the summer, only a little sap comes out when the cuts are made. However, after repeated scores, large amounts of sap overflow from the trees by the height of the summer. The urushi trees are deciduous and their leaves turn red in the fall. Eventually, at the end of the extraction season, the dead trees are cut down.

According to the traditional “seshime” method, cut tree branches were collected and lacquer was extracted from the tips of these branches as well. This was more of a side job during the off-season in the winter and barely done each year due to the small amount it yielded. In recent years, it is rare to see “seshime” when the lacquer industry has been economically slower. The lacquer obtained from the seshime process is called “seshime urushi,“ (seshime lacquer) which has a high viscosity and is treated separately as a material.

The urushi tree is cut down for its sap, but its roots are not dead. Sprouts [*1] grow and regenerate in the next year. It will take more than ten years for the tree to grow into a mature form from which urushi can be harvested again.

Today, with the collapse of our consumerist society on the horizon and the realization that our planet’s resources are not sustainable at our current rate, one theory suggests that we must slow down our consumption rate to what it was in the 1970s. In other words, in our modern age, we are increasingly looking toward our past lifestyles for clues to our future social structures.

In traditional lacquer harvesting, every last drop of sap is extracted from an urushi tree, but the tree itself is not destroyed until the very end so that it can regenerate again later. This lifestyle that is seemingly in close contact with the life force of the forest may contain some clues for the future of our society.

At the end of the lacquering season, the branches of the urushi tree are discarded after the sap has been wrung out. These branches were then coated with "urushi” as processed goods and made into a work of art titled, «Urushi Lacquered Urushi Branches» (2021).

Additionally, as an extension of this work, «Urushi Lacquered Urushi Wood» designed to be completed through a 10-year process is currently being produced. Since 2021, the Urushi Project team has been filming lacquer tapping in Fukuchiyama City in Kyoto Prefecture. After being filmed and cut down at the end of the 2021 season, the piece “Urushi Lacquered Urushi Wood” aims to preserve the tree as a work of art.

—Why is it meaningless?

Perhaps because there is a general perception that "urushi promotes (an object’s) beauty and refines its luxury”.

One of art’s functions is to transform the "familiar" into the "unfamiliar". Words become routine with continued use, their meaning eventually slipping away and becoming "auto-mechanized". The ancient Greeks called this "Doxa". When the thought (or assumption) that "urushi promotes beauty and elevates luxury" is entrenched, the image of the material becomes "doxa-ized". Even before we see the real thing, we have unconsciously (and unknowingly) created the idea that "lacquer = beauty (or coated in something beautiful)".

On the other hand, the concept of "ostranenie" (defamiliarization) established by Viktor Borisovich Shklovsky and others in the Russian avant-garde, refers to the re-normalization and de-normalization of things.

«Urushi Lacquered Urushi Wood» is about using urushi as paint, which is an expensive material refined by human hands, on "urushi wood" from which "urushi lacquer" as a raw material is extracted and then discarded. What is the meaning of using such high-grade paint for something meaningless, something that is not worth decorating? Moreover, what if that "paint" is raw material extracted from another raw material? The emphasis lies in the significance of harvesting urushi from urushi trees. Why do people take the trouble to extract “urushi” from “urushi”?

Of course, the amount of lacquer needed to completely preserve an urushi tree with “urushi" is far from sufficient. This is similar to our consumer lifestyle in the capitalist economy, where the amount of energy consumed by an individual does not necessarily match the amount of energy produced by them.

«Urushi Lacquered Urushi Wood» functions as an icon of the Urushi Project, contemplating the changes of values in a materialistic society with questions and contradictions about oneself—inquiries that swirl endlessly in an urushi-colored black hole.
