Hey, I recently came across your Tumblr and really liked the style of your sketches, specifically the Arthur Morgan ones as I am a big RDR fan. I have been trying to practice sketching the last couple of months but find it really difficult and demoralizing at times. Could you please give me some advice? (Also, sorry for the question as you probably don't usually get these kinds of questions) :)
Hi! I get a few of these questions once in a while back when Tumblr had its heyday and I welcome them each time so no worries. And I'm glad you like my Arthur sketches :) I've been meaning to draw him again.
My advise to you is that try to simplefy what you want to sketch at first before you go over the details. Everything is composed of shapes like, for instance, a dog's head has a circle and triangles for ears and a rectangle for the snout. Draw the shapes before you form your drawing. The details are meant to be enjoyed later rather than be stressed about right at the start.
Another tip is that try to determine the shadows and lighting first. Contrast makes a big difference. The more cotrast there is, the clearer your sketch gets. So don't be afraid to darken the very darks and leave the brightest blank.
Also, repetition with thought makes perfect. It's another phrase for "practice makes perfect" but a lot of people miss the point and just do repetition without thinking what should be improved so that the next sketch can be better. You need to think how the sketch is better or worse and how to improve it before you draw again to make a better version. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, you win some you lose some.
Lastly, take your time. I've had a problem with rushing over the years but I realized it's always better to savor the slow process. The slower you get, the more ideas you have on how to improve your sketch. It's always worthwhile in the end.
These tips are not as extensive as I would've liked but I hope they help.
