Muscle soreness. - D.O.M.S. - Delayed Onset Muscle Sorenss. - *What is it? *Is it bad? *Can I train through it? *If I don't feel it, does it mean I'm not improving? - First of all, what is it? Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles several hours to days after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise. The soreness is felt most strongly 24 to 72 hours after the exercise. - Is it bad? Not at all. It means your muscles, as stated above, have been through unaccustomed or strenuous exercise. Maybe you've changed your routine a little, added more exercises, increased volume or intensity, it's all factored into challenging your muscles due to your muscles adapting to more ready itself for the next time around. - Can I train through it? You can, but it isn't recommended in the same intensity. It's proven that, after a heavy weight day, doing a couple of the exercises, but with very low weight, for a couple sets can help recovery due to a lesser stress stimulus keeping the muscle active, not just lazy and unused since the heavy day. However, if you're feeling sore after 72 hours, take note that you most likely trained that muscle group too hard. - If I don't feel D.O.M.S, does it mean I'm not improving? Absolutely not. Not all workouts will trigger this response. This does not mean your workouts aren't working or stimulating the muscles properly. - Your workouts are working through long-term adaptations, you won't know right away. But D.O.M.S is a reaction of the breakdown of muscle fibres through strenuous and unaccustomed exercise. Remember that! - If you don't feel some sort of new muscle feeling a couple days after an intense workout, you need to listen. - Listen to your body. If it aches, don't do it. If it hasn't had some form of soreness reaction in a couple weeks, you need to push a little harder. - Change it up, increase intensity, add some weight, add some reps, reduce the resting, adjust the tempo, etc. - Peace! - - #thefitnessward #fitnesscoach #fitness #fit #motivation #trainer #training #workout #workouttrainer #skimble #skimbler #pt #gym #tuesdaymotivation #education #themoreyouknow #soreness (at The Fitness Ward)
