In a nut shell: AOS S1E2
Skimmons looking at each other lovingly after almost dying
Fitz reevaluating his decision of leaving his pristine lab back at the Academy.
Ward wondering if risking his life for Hydra is really worth it.
Hey! I love your writing so much! I was wondering if you could do a skimmons/bioquake Amazing Spider-man AU with Daisy as Spidey and Jemma as Gwen? Bonus is Jemma/Gwen doesn't die.
When I die, please ensure that the words “this was longer than I anticipated” are etched on my tombstone. Thank you.
Daisy Johnson is in love. There’s just no doubt about it.
Honestly, it’s been kind of a crazy year. It all started with that dumb class trip to OsCorp that ended in a bite from a radioactive spider. Then came the powers and the whole with great power comes great responsibility thing. And, of course, there was Jemma Simmons: high school student by day, OsCorp intern and budding biochemist by afternoon and early evening. In the months since the whole spider bite thing, Jemma has been helping her make sense of her new powers and her new genetic makeup and Daisy has been trying to get a handle on trying to save people and not swing in through apartment windows.
And there’s the whole falling in love thing. Sometimes Daisy thinks that’s the craziest thing of all and that’s saying something since she can shoot webbing out of her wrists. But Jemma is…Jemma. And she’s just Daisy, superhero status notwithstanding.
But hey. It’s New York City in December; there’s snow on the ground and Christmas lights in the windows. There’s ice skating and giant trees and excited kids and cheerful families and Daisy thinks there are worst things in the world than being in love at a time like this.
Jemma is walking down the sidewalk beside her, hands stuck into the pockets of her heavy winter coat. She’s got a scarf wrapped around her neck but her nose is still a little pink from the cold and Daisy honestly finds the whole thing adorable and she’d lean over and kiss Jemma right then if they weren’t already running late.
“I’ll try and run the test on your blood today,” Jemma says and Daisy nods because she knows Jemma is going to do it regardless of her response. “Dr. Connors has been acting so strangely lately that I’m not sure I’ll be able to slip away without him noticing.”
Daisy frowns. “What do you mean strange?”
Jemma shrugs. “Just…he’s not been himself.” Her brow furrows as she thinks. “He’s been so secretive and he’s been pushing and pushing for me and the rest of the team to increase our research on the spiders and the regenerating compound.” She shakes her head. “I think he’s just overworked.”
Daisy feels a twinge of worry resonate through her chest. Jemma told her months ago about a spider’s ability to sense danger almost before it arrived to be better protect itself against the threat. She doesn’t know why she should think of Jemma’s boss as a threat but still…love and Christmas aside, New York has been a strange place recently.
“Just be careful,” Daisy finds herself saying.
Jemma looks at her skeptically. “Of Dr. Connors?”
Rather than insist, Daisy just offers her a lopsided smile, like she was only just kidding. “Of radioactive spiders,” she teases instead, bumping Jemma’s shoulder with her own. “I hear they bite.”
They’re outside OsCorp now and Jemma turns to face Daisy, smiling. “I’ll be careful,” she says playfully, taking Daisy’s face in her gloved hands and pulling her in for a kiss. “Don’t get into trouble while I’m at work.”
Daisy winks. “No promises.”
They share another kiss and then Jemma steps away, disappearing into the OsCorp facility. Daisy turns to head back the way they just came, dipping her head against the chill of the wind. Hopefully she can keep her pseudo-promise to Jemma and manage to stay out of trouble but there’s just no telling what’ll happen in the city. In the past several months, it seems like the boroughs have become a breeding ground for the weird and unexplainable. There’s the guy in red who runs around busting bad guys and the giant mutant lizard man who has been causing havoc and has been the result of more than a few of the bumps and bruises that Daisy has had to endure. Not to mention the web-slinging superhero that the newspapers seem obsessed with recently…though Daisy doesn’t always mind seeing herself in the headlines.
When Daisy gets home, she finds her Aunt May in the kitchen sorting through the mail while her Uncle Andrew finishes up with dinner. Andrew looks at her with a smile. “No Jemma tonight?”
Daisy frowns. “She’s at work.” She joins May at the kitchen table, though the woman seems more interested in the mail than her niece.
She’s lived with them in this small apartment for most of her life. Daisy can hardly remember her parents and May doesn’t talk about her sister much. There’s a picture of Jiaying and Cal that Daisy keeps in her room, stuck onto a bulletin board right beside a picture of her and Jemma but that’s about the only thing she has of her parents. Most of the time it doesn’t matter; May and Andrew have been as good to her as any parents ever could have been. But sometimes, Daisy wonders what they would make of all this superpower stuff.
“You’re late,” May remarks when she finally sets the mail aside. “We weren’t sure if you would make it for dinner.”
“I’m sorry,” Daisy says automatically. “I was just walking Jemma to work. Honest.” She immediately wishes that she could take back that last little bit because it implies that her other excuses -of which there are many- have not been honest at all.
Though Daisy figures that May and Andrew aren’t as dumb as she’d like to think they are. She’s starting to run out of excuses as to why she’s coming home late and all banged up anyway.
They eat in companionable silence for the most part, though they share a little about their days: Daisy about school, Andrew about his practice, May about her shifts at the hospital.
“There have been some strange injuries recently,” May says almost absently. “Strange slash marks, like an animal is running loose somewhere.”
Daisy lifts her head, swallowing down the piece of food that suddenly feels stuck in her throat. “Really?”
May nods. “It’s incredibly bizarre,” she says. “The victims are delirious when they come in, babbling incoherently. They don’t remember much.”
Daisy wants to ask what they’re babbling about but she already knows. There’s a scar across her ribs from a set of claw marks that sounds exactly like what May is describing, courtesy of the lizardman she’s been running afoul of. Daisy had been certain she was going to die that night. Up until that point, being a superhero had been easy; she’d been foiling bank robberies and muggings and domestic disputes like she’d been doing it her whole life. And then she’d run into the lizardman and he’d left her crumpled and bleeding on the sidewalk within minutes. That had been the night she’d told Jemma the truth; she’d had no one else to turn to but the classmate who occasionally tutored her in chemistry and lived only a block away from where Daisy had found herself. She’d told Jemma everything, mostly because she thought she was going to bleed to death on her bedroom floor and she’d wanted someone to know that Spider-Man was really a teenage girl who was terrible in math. But she hadn’t died and she hadn’t regretted telling Jemma the truth.
Since then, their paths have crossed but it’s been several weeks since she’s seen the lizardman out and in action. Daisy had thought, naively of course, that he was gone and that she could just go back to stopping robberies and swinging around the city daydreaming about pretty girls. Clearly she’d thought wrong.
After dinner, Daisy disappears into her room to do her homework but she only gives it half her attention. With the rest of her mind, she listens out to the city around her, waiting for the moment when someone needs her help. She knows what it’s like to feel helpless, to be unable to stop something terrible from happening or to help the people you love. She remembers feeling that way when she was only six and being unable to help her parents. She doesn’t want anyone else to feel that way.
She’s almost done with her math homework when she hears the sound of police sirens. Daisy leaps gratefully into action, shedding her clothes so that she’s only wearing her blue and red costume (with necessary scientific adjustments, thanks Jemma) and pulls on her mask, jumping from the open window. This is one of her favorite feelings, this brief moment of freefall; she feels weightless and powerful, capable of anything.
The moment is over all too soon and she flicks her wrist, shooting a string of webbing onto the eaves of the nearest building. These moments aren’t so terrible either; it feels like flying as she swings from building to building, high above the rest of the city. Sometimes people look up and see her and she catches only the briefest glimpse of the wonder on their faces. It only spurs her to go faster, to fight harder, to do more. These are the people she wants to protect, the ones who don’t know what it feels like to be capable of doing anything.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Daisy is sweating by the time she drops to the sidewalk in front of OsCorp. She really wants to pull off her mask and breathe but she didn’t think to bring even a jacket to throw over her costume so it’s kind of out of the question. At least it’s late enough that most people aren’t out anymore but still, she can’t risk it.
Normally she doesn’t meet Jemma to walk her home but…well, she’s already out. There’s no reason for Jemma to take a cab if she can walk in the company of a superhero.
Jemma looks surprised to find her hanging around outside. “Dai-Spider Man! What are you doing here?” Anyone else who might overhear her would think she was shocked. Daisy knows her well enough to hear the skepticism in her voice.
“Just hanging around the neighborhood,” Daisy replies. “Thought I’d walk a defenseless maiden home.”
Jemma rolls her eyes. “I’ll let you know if I find one of those around.”
Daisy grins behind her mask. Yeah, she’s totally in love. It’s pretty pathetic.
They start walking away from the building. “How was work?”
“Fine,” Jemma says softly and she doesn’t elaborate.
Daisy nudges her gently. “Fine?”
Jemma nods. “Yes.” She seems distracted and glances over her shoulder toward the OsCorp building. There’s a light still on in one of the floors and when Daisy looks to see what Jemma is looking at, she’s pretty sure there’s someone standing by the window, watching them.
“Hey.” Daisy looks at her and really wishes that she wasn’t wearing a mask. “What’s the matter?”
“Nothing,” Jemma assures her, an absent smile on her face. She lifts her hand, rubbing at the back of her neck. “I’m just tired. And, like I said, Dr. Connors has been acting strangely and…” She sighs, rubbing at her neck again. “It was just a long day.”
Daisy still doesn’t believe her but she can’t exactly force Jemma into telling her what’s on her mind. As much as she wishes she could. “But you’re okay?”
Jemma looks at her and nods, her smile a little more sincere. She just looks tired and there’s worry in her eyes and Daisy will just have to trust that if there was something really wrong then Jemma would tell her. “I’m fine.” She reaches for Daisy’s hand and gives it a squeeze. “How are you? Obviously not staying out of trouble?”
Daisy shrugs. “What? My city needs me.”
Jemma laughs, rolling her eyes. “I’m sure they do, Spider-Man.” She rubs at the back of her neck again before letting her hand fall away. “Thanks for walking me home. I'm…I’m glad to see you.”
Daisy puts her arm around Jemma and pulls her close. She’s always glad to see Jemma; that much goes without saying.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Daisy can taste blood in her mouth and she hopes that it’s from a split lip or a bitten tongue and not from something deeper inside and more vital. Her ears are ringing and she’s pretty sure that her muscles are telling her that they’re about to go into shut-down mode. Even still, Daisy shakes her head, spitting blood out onto the ground and forcing herself back to her feet.
The Lizard doesn’t seem as impressed by this as Daisy feels. “You truly are a spider,” he sneers, pulling his scaly lips back into a feral sneer. “Loathsome and unwanted.”
He swings his tail at her again and Daisy just barely manages to jump out of the way, crawling across the top of the sewer tunnel she’d chased him into. It had been a stupid decision even then but the Lizard had taken out several police officers and was absconding with a piece of OsCorp technology. Who else was going to step in if not Spider-Man herself? Daisy had just been grateful that Jemma wasn’t in the lab when the mutant monster had broken into it to get whatever he needed for some diabolical plan that Daisy knows she’s going to have to foil. If she can survive, that is.
The Lizard hisses up at her and Daisy focuses all her energy on not losing her grip. “Shoo, Spider-Man,” he chuckles. “If you know what’s good for you.”
“What’s good for me is stopping you,” Daisy retorts with a vim and vigor she definitely doesn’t feel. “I can’t let you keep hurting people.”
The Lizard stands to his full height but his claws can’t quite reach her. “I don’t want to hurt them,” he says. “I just want to help them, make them better and stronger. Like me.”
Daisy crawls out of reach just in case, huddling behind the Lizard. “I’m sure no one in this city wants to be as ugly as you are.”
The Lizard whips around, hissing at her and slamming his tail against the wall. Daisy nearly loses her grip but manages to stay out of reach. “I’m giving you a chance,” he snarls. “Stay away. You can’t stop me so stop trying.”
“I can’t do that,” Daisy says, even though it feels like a good idea right about now given all the blood and throbbing ribs.
The Lizard cocks his head. “Not even for the sake of your pretty little girlfriend?”
Daisy feels her heart stop in her chest and she nearly slips from the ceiling. “What?”
“I saw you two together,” the Lizard points a clawed finger at her. “The second I see you again, I’ll come for her first.”
The Lizard gathers up his tech and prepares to scurry deeper down the tunnel. Daisy lunges after him, motivated primarily by her fear for Jemma. She can’t let him get away, not when he knows about Jemma, not when he plans to hurt her. She lands on the Lizard’s back, hitting him with every ounce of strength that she has left inside of her.
It’s not enough. The Lizard grabs her in a clawed hand, tearing her suit as he throws her into the wall. Everything goes black and by the time Daisy opens her eyes again, the Lizard is gone and she’s alone in the tunnel.
The first place Daisy goes is Jemma’s apartment. Every part of her hurts but she still manages to swing and that’s all that matters. She tumbles through Jemma’s open window, landing gracelessly on Jemma’s floor. She lifts her head to find Jemma already hurrying over to her. The TV on her dresser is on, replaying footage of the Lizard escaping from OsCorp and of Spider-Man in pursuit.
Jemma falls to her knees, putting her arms around Daisy and holding her tightly. It hurts but Daisy only wishes that she could hold Jemma even tighter.
Jemma presses her face against Daisy’s temple, her lips brushing against her skin and Daisy closes her eyes and all she can think about is the Lizard and the fact that he knows who Jemma is. All she can imagine is his claws…tearing her to pieces… Daisy shudders and pulls Jemma closer.
When they finally separate, Jemma meets Daisy’s gaze. “I think Dr. Connors is the Lizard.”
Just when Daisy didn’t think this night could get any worse.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“For the last time,” Daisy says shortly, glaring at Jemma, “you aren’t coming.”
Jemma rolls her eyes. “Yes, I am.” She says this the same way she’s said it fifty times before: with the absolute certainty of someone who is going to get their way. “You aren’t going to do this yourself.”
Daisy frowns. “I can do it,” she insists. “I’m the superhero here.”
“Well done, Daisy,” Jemma says dryly. “I’m sure the mayor will be getting your medal any day.”
Daisy crosses her arms over the front of her suit. It’s been patched back together, fairing much better than she is after the last meeting with the Lizard. “Jemma, please. Just tell me what to do. I promise-”
“Stop being so stubborn,” Jemma interrupts, waving her hand. “We can do this together. You’re still hurt from meeting him the last time…you need me.”
Daisy does, but not in the way that Jemma is currently thinking.
It’s been a week since she last saw the Lizard. The selfish, terrified part of her hoped that Jemma was wrong, that Dr. Connors wasn’t the Lizard and that they could all just go about their business and ignore each other. Jemma would be safe and the Lizard would do whatever it was that mutant Lizards did. Of course, Daisy had also known better than to think that such a thing would happen.
Jemma had put the pieces together easily, figuring out what it was that Dr. Connors had taken and what his plan was. It wasn’t pretty; something about trying to turn everyone in New York City into hideous lizard-people.
“I made the antidote,” Jemma continues, reaching into the pocket of her white hoodie and pulling out the vial. “And I know how to work the machine.” She lifts an eyebrow. “Do you?”
“I know how to kick his ass,” Daisy retorts, though that might be stretching it a bit. Jemma, graciously, does not point that out. “That way he won’t even get to the machine to unleash the serum.”
Jemma shakes her head. “That’s a nice thought but there always needs to be a back-up plan.” She puts her hand to her chest. “I’m the back-up plan. And if I can get the antidote into the machine then it will work on him too. We’re doing this together.”
Daisy shakes her head. “No, we aren’t.” She reaches for the vial but Jemma slaps her hand away. “Jemma, he’s going to kill you, he told me. I can’t just let you walk right into danger.”
Jemma smiles at her. “He’s not going to kill me,” she assures Daisy. “That’s what you’re here for.”
Daisy sighs, puffing out her cheeks as she exhales. “No pressure.”
Jemma kisses her softly. “Let’s go. We have a city to save.” She turns away, flipping up the hood of her jacket and starting off toward OsCorp.
Daisy purses her lips but doesn’t call after her. She just pulls her mask on, trying to ignore the pounding of her heart.
Of course the Lizard is at the very top of OsCorp. Jemma tries to explain something about dispersion patterns and effecting the entire city but all Daisy can think is ‘figures.’ Before the whole radioactive spider thing, she’d been terrified of heights. Obviously being able to swing from buildings and stop herself from falling helps alleviate some of the fear but that doesn’t mean that she’s excited about heading to the top of one of the tallest buildings in the city to do battle with a mutant scientist for the safety of the whole population and her girlfriend’s.
Daisy stops thinking about heights when she goes head to head with the Lizard. Dr. Connors is already powering up the machine and Daisy tries to push aside her fear, reminding herself that if she doesn’t keep him distracted and out of the way than Jemma is going to be directly in his sights.
It doesn’t take long before Daisy is already feeling rattled, like her brain is rolling around in her skull loosely thanks to the bashing she’s taken from the Lizard. Her costume is torn and her mask is missing but she’s managed to score a few hits of her own and he hasn’t gotten close to Jemma, despite his best efforts. Every time Dr. Connors manages to twist away from Daisy or free himself from her webs, he makes a beeline for Jemma, who is desperately attempting to dismantle the machine and insert the antidote into the chamber.
But so far Daisy has managed to keep him away from her, even if it means she’s probably broken every bone in her body and feels a lot like a spider crushed underneath someone’s boot. Totally worth it.
Dr. Connors howls in frustration when he sees Jemma wrench the vial of his serum free and slip it into her pocket. He throws Daisy aside, clawing his way across the rooftop in Jemma’s direction. He grabs her foot with his claws, jerking her forward and off her feet. She lands with a sharp cry that Daisy feels straight through her chest.
Daisy shoots webbing toward the Lizard, wrapping the strands around his muzzle and jerking his head back. It distracts him enough that he lets go of Jemma and she crawls her way back to the machine, antidote already in hand.
The Lizard and Spider-Man exchange a few more blows as the machine powers itself back up and Daisy’s head is ringing and she’s not sure how much longer she can keep this wrestling match up. She only hopes that Jemma is right and that the antidote will work on Dr. Connors too.
Jemma lets out a cry of victory and both Daisy and Dr. Connors look in her direction. “I’ve got it!” Jemma calls, getting to her feet, all smiles. “It’s dispersing now.”
Dr. Connors throws Daisy aside and once again leaps forward, grabbing Jemma in one clawed hand and the machine in the other. Daisy hurries toward Jemma but she shakes her head, pointing wildly at the device. “Daisy! Stop him!”
Daisy hesitates and Dr. Connors only smiles, showing every one of his sharp teeth. He pulls back his arm and throws Jemma as hard as he can, sending her right over the edge of the OsCorp building.
Daisy is certain her entire world stops in that moment. All she can see is Jemma -her eyes wide, expression one of perfect terror- and it feels like she’ll never be able to move fast enough. Daisy extends both wrists, one toward Jemma and the other toward the machine. It feels like the webbing heading toward Jemma is going too slowly, impossibly slow, like she’ll never be able to catch her in time.
Jemma disappears over the side of the building and the webbing flies harmlessly overhead.
Daisy feels like some dormant part of herself is clawing its way free, shredding through her heart and her chest to get out. This part of her hands to hurt and destroy and kill.
“No!” She screams and the word tears from her throat like it has claws. Daisy turns back to Dr. Connors, pulling with all her might and ripping the machine out of his hands. The chemical is already dispersing, the cloud spreading between the two of them. Daisy can only hope that it kills him instead of turning him human once more.
Daisy tosses the device aside and rushes to the edge of the building. It’s too late, she knows it. Jemma is gone. She’s gone. She’s lost her. But still, Daisy finds herself dropping to her knees, peering down into the darkness of the city below.
And there’s Jemma.
Daisy almost can’t believe her eyes. Jemma is clinging to the side of the building, holding onto a cable of webbing and trying not to look down. Her shoes have already slipped off her feet and Daisy can hear the erratic pounding of her heart.
For a second, Daisy thinks that maybe she was able to reach her on time after all, that she only thought that her webs hadn’t caught Jemma as she fell. But then she realizes that the webbing keeping Jemma stuck to the building seems to be coming from her own wrist and Daisy figures that this is one of those 'ask questions later’ deals seeing as Jemma is still alive and hanging from a building and Daisy isn’t going to miss her chance to save her again.
Jemma holds onto Daisy tightly as they swing away from the building, leaving Dr. Connors and the device to the massing of cops waiting down below. As they zip by, a cheer rises from the crowd but the sound doesn’t feel as good as the weight of Jemma in her arms.
They land on the top of Jemma’s apartment building, a favorite meeting spot for the two of them. Daisy steps away to look at Jemma, to ascertain that she’s not imagining things but being away from her seems stupid and she grabs Jemma into her arms again, pulling her close. Her cheeks are wet with tears and she figures that she’s earned it, seeing as she’d just experienced the feeling of a world without Jemma Simmons in it. Even if that reality had only lasted a minute.
Jemma clings to her and they stay that way for a while, unable or perhaps unwilling to speak. Not that there’s really anything to say.
But finally, when Daisy has managed to convince her whirling brain and her pounding heart that Jemma is alive and well and in her arms, she pulls back, her curiosity getting the better of her. She reaches for Jemma’s wrist, running her thumb along the veins and the faint marks there. She recognizes them because she has them on her wrists as well.
“How?” Daisy whispers, her brow furrowing, her eyes searching Jemma’s.
Jemma only shakes her head. “Dr. Connors,” she says quietly. “The night you came to meet me after work…he was acting strangely. He couldn’t stop talking about the spiders and their properties and abilities. He made me go into the room where we keep them to collect a few specimens and…I thought I felt one bite me but…” She touches her hand to the back of her neck reflexively. “Nothing happened. I didn’t have any of the symptoms you did and I…I didn’t have any of the powers.” Her cheeks flush and Daisy can’t help but imagine Jemma in her room, trying out her own potential spider abilities. “So I figured I had just made a mistake. Now I guess…”
Daisy kisses her. “Thank you, radioactive spiders.” She smiles.
Jemma grins in return. “So I guess this means you have a partner now.”
Daisy wrinkles her nose. “I mean, I wouldn’t go that far…I prefer to work alone and I don’t want you getting hurt and-”
“Hypocrite,” Jemma chides playfully and she waves away Daisy’s protests. “It’ll be great; we’ll be able to keep the city safe.”
Daisy sighs. “I dunno…”
It’s not that she doesn’t think that Jemma can handle it, it’s just that she’s had enough worrying for one lifetime. Not that she thinks her protests will make a difference. She can already tell that Jemma has made up her mind. And, honestly, she doesn’t mind so much. Having Jemma for a partner doesn’t seem so terrible.
“You’ll see,” Jemma assures her with a quick kiss. “Spider-Man and Spider-Jemma.”
Daisy makes a face. “Maybe we need to work on our superhero names.”
I need a good skimmons fic!!
