Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 7x13 - What We're Fighting For
Hive (in Nathaniel's body) as the Big Bad of S7
Despite continuously cheating the ceremony (3x16), OG Timeline Wilfred Malick was a believer: he kept the Ancient Hydra tradition going *and* raised his sons to believe in it. It's a fair assumption that in the branched timeline the Chronicoms wisely discouraged the pursuit of the "Hydra god", but what if they hadn't... Enter Nathaniel, another believer in the main timeline, who might have aspired to "ascend" at the god's side or whatever, obsessing over Hive's return just as much as his elder brother did in his later years.
In the OG timeline, Hydra needed the knowledge acquired by Simmons during her stay on Maveth, buffed by the subsequent research for a way to bring Will back but, in the branched timeline, with better tech thanks to the Chronicoms' aid, Wilfred could have been exploring Maveth for some time, sending probes in addition to men for Hive to feed on/possess (as Hydra had always known how to open the portal from Earth, finding the portal on Maveth to make it a round trip was the issue). Enter Nathaniel, who surprise-jumps into the Monolith during one of these tests, a-la Fitz in 3x02. Then Hive happens to have the same lucky timing that Simmons had, and voilà: he's back. (cue me hissing at the screen: not this a*hole again!🤬😂)
Pros:
Less legwork needed to build Nathaniel up, since Hive's backstory, motivations and danger level would be already well-established.
Kora's turns, that in the span of so few episodes give whiplash, wouldn't be a thing. She'd be swayed, which is physically impossible for Inhumans to resist it (without Lash's help).
No need to deploy any kind of plot armor to ensure Malick III makes it to the final showdown. Hive's nearly unkillable when he's not been starving for centuries (although now that Daisy has learned how to "literally turn [things] into dust", less so).
No need for Daisy to be violated again and for trivializing Inhuman powers. If Daisy has to be out of play for a couple of episodes, she can be shot or something. That'd put her in the temporal anomalies-proofed healing pod just the same for 7x09. And Hive's minions wouldn't be juiced-up humans who learn how to use their newly acquired abilities in five minutes, they'd be swayed Inhumans.
Instead of "you could be running into a trap because Sybil predicts everything (unless she doesn't)", the reason why Yo-Yo wouldn't speed through Afterlife knocking everybody out in seconds in 7x10, for instance, is Hive's presence, as YoYo, unlike Daisy, would not be immune to the sway. So she could be immediately benched, nitpick-free (murder vests? What murder vests?😁)
Daisy's suicide mission gains more weight since it's Hive, the one enemy she didn't best and almost destroyed her, not a Quake knock-off she's stalling waiting for the time to go Super Saiyan. And the parallel with Lincoln's death is much stronger if it's Hive.
The opportunity for an "after the sway" talk between the sisters to give Daisy definite closure with her own experience: "I know it feels like it was all your fault, believe me, I know. But it wasn't. You were his victim". Something along those lines but, you know, better.
Daisy's cocky grin and sassy comeback when Hive would have found out the hard way he couldn't sway her.
Hive's fashion sense in the 1970s and 1980s. Because the fondness for billowy long coats is def a Nathaniel's thing, but Hive was far more stylish.
Cons:
The final antagonist would be an old antagonist. It could be bigger and flashier (except S3 probably had a bigger budget so...), but not truly different. And his creepiness would be diminished without wearing the face of a character both the audience and the team had a long and complicated history with (Ward). I'm also not sure if Hive deserved a second term as the Big Bad. He's a good villain, but to warrant a comeback as the final one? Maybe not. His presence would also take further attention away from the Chronicoms and Sybil.
If Kora is swayed, convincing her to help would be impossible, which erases her arc, such as it was, and makes May's, Daisy's and Coulson's (wow, it was really all about family, wasn't it?) influence on her irrelevant. The final showdown's pieces would have to be moved around/modified or they would have had to introduce another cure for the sway, running the risk of trivializing Lash's sacrifice, which is worse than the trivialization of Inhumans powers. Although Simmons could have come up with something by analyzing Daisy's brain and somehow replicate the effect of his power. Bibbidi-scienceydi-boo, but it would still be Lash's help.
Why would the Chronicoms ever be okay with the Malicks bringing Hive back? Hive's a massive PITA for them as well, so they wouldn't/shouldn't. Sybil is hardly omniscient, as the season has proved many times over, but failing to completely anticipate that the Malicks' beliefs could lead to a clusterfuck if not checked seems too much.
I don't see why Young Garrett would ever need to be involved if Hive is running the show and that would have been a loss.
So, Yay or Nay?
you guys remember the moment in daisys final battle against nathaniel malick when he says "im honored to be your last." and then he activates koras power and this is the literal moment daisy realizes that after almost cutting her to pieces and murdering an actual good version of her mom in front of her, he now gave her long lost sister she just met the same treatment after using her for his twisted campaign of world domination. the look on her face when the realization hits -
