i’m known to bite in tight situations
when you walk in a room I follow around like a dog. I’m a dog, I’m a dog, I’m a lapdog. I’m your lapdog.
‘Skip Divided’ by Thom Yorke, from ‘The Eraser’
can you fucking believe that once thom yorke sat down on a chair and decided to himself “i gonna write a song with “i m a dog i m a dog i m your lap dog yeah” line in it”
Don't look into your eyes cause I'm desperately in love
In love, in love
Oh, when you walk in the room everything disappears
When you walk in the room it's a terrible mess
When you walk in the room I start to melt
When you walk in the room I follow you round like a dog
I'm a dog, I'm a dog, I'm a lapdog
I'm your lapdog, yeah
I just got a number and location
I just need my number and location
Hello, I am curious if you have identified Flea's Melodica on Skip Divided (at least) during the Atoms for Peace times.. I am searching through your blog and have trouble in finding the direct post. Thank you much
For Atoms for Peace shows from 2009-2013, Flea played a Suzuki A-34C Melodion. “Melodion” is Suzuki’s name for their melodicas. The A-34 notable for its blue color with distinctive white accents on either end of the keyboard. Flea played the melodica for Skip Divided.
For amplification, initially a gooseneck microphone was simply taped to the bottom of the melodica. The microphone was then bent towards the keys. The cable from the mic is visible in footage from various shows in 2009 and 2010, including at Coachella. When the band went on a full tour in 2013, a radio transmitter was velcro’d to the bottom instead. This allowed Flea to dance around the stage even more freely while playing.
A photo of Flea playing the A-34C at the Echoplex on October 2, 2009 (RockIsAGirlsBestFriend). Note the distinctive pattern of the black keys on keyboard, with two sets of two black keys below a set of three black keys. Also note the black gooseneck microphone.
Two shots of Flea playing the Suzuki melodica at the Zenith in Munich on July 10, 2013 (maggiebear74). Note the black mouthpiece and end ring on the white air tube. Also note the radio transmitter velcro’d to the bottom.
Details of the A-34C
Suzuki’s model A-34C looks quite similar to their model M-32C, both featuring a blue body with white accents. However, there are a few key differences. Most notable is the number of keys, with the A-34C having two additional. However, the layout of the keyboard itself is different: the A-34C starts on a “G” and ascends to an E, whereas M-32C starts on an “F” and ascends to a “C”. This gives the A-34C’s keyboard a more distinctive pattern. In addition, the A-32C has rounded ends. In contrast, the M-32C has squared ends, with a large square switch for the spit valve.

Flea's Other Melodicas
However, it’s worth noting that Flea did use a second blue melodica for shows in 2013: a Yamaha Pianica P-32D. The Yamaha instrument has a simpler design, without the white accents on the ends. It also has 32 keys, with the more standard melodica layout starting on an “F”. It looks similar to Hohner’s Student 32 Melodica, but the Hohner has a slightly offset hole for the mouthpiece, whereas the Yamaha has a centered hole. The second melodica is visible in footage from New York’s Barclays Center and London’s Roundhouse.
For the band’s performance at Exit R:Evolution in 2013, Flea had a third melodica. This is a similar 32 key instrument to the Yamaha melodica, but instead has a red case.
Both were mic'd in the same way as at the A-34C: with a gooseneck microphone connected to a radio transmitter.
