The family of skunks that live on our property had a rager a few nights ago and our entire house smelled like skunk for a solid 24 hours.
I don't know why this happened but they either had an internal dispute or they were beefing with some of the other random critters who live here.
Whatever the reason they left their mark on at least half of the house and the back slab we call a patio including our feral cat's bed
So we have spent the last couple of days powerwashing everything outside in the hopes of lessening the lasting effects of the chemical warfare they inflicted on us.
Side Note: I am one of the 1 in a thousand people who can not smell skunk scent. When it's as thick as it was, I can kind of taste it and I certainly feel dizzy/have headaches when it's that bad but I still don't smell it.
It's been three days and I just finished re-washing everything out back again and our feral cat's bed because the odor is still floating around the house, depending on which windows are open.
My SO can fully smell skunk and has been suffering through the last few days. But because he's the only one of us who can smell it, I need to keep asking him "Does this smell like skunk?" "Does this still smell like skunk? How about this?" I'm afraid we're going to be in public and people are going to think we bathe in skunk-funk.
I don't know what caused the great skunk war of '25 but I'm really hoping it doesn't happen again because we may have to take more aggressive action against them and I genuinely do not want to do that.
This family of skunks has lived on this property longer than we have. I know it's the same family because they have unique coloring in that they have white fur on top and some black fur underneath. They lack the stripes that most skunks have.
If the skunks continue to fight around the house we will probably have to hire some pest control to deal with them. Someone who can relocate them without hurting them if that's even possible with skunks.

I just realized it has been a year since the rabid skunk showed up in my neighborhood and tomorrow will have been a year since said skunk attacked my dog, my father and my sister and I. 2013 started in a crazy and unbelievable way.
When Skunks Attack!
Until last night, I thought skunk attacks only happened on the discovery channel. Boy was I in for a surprise...
Though I've known my in-laws were planning a visit to San Diego this week for months now, I like many women no doubt put off cleaning and preparing until the last minute. I finally had my house smelling like lemons and sunshine just before mid-night, and that's when I heard it. A very familiar wine from my little 4lb Morkie, Sadie.
It was very late, but Sadie is often so focused on chasing the ball on her outings outside that she forgets to relieve herself until she comes down off her mini-green tennis ball high. The ball is like extra strength Ritalin pills. I often wonder if there is little more going on in her cute little head than, "Ball? Ball? Ball?"
So where was I? It was late, and she was standing by the door feigning desperation, so I opened it and followed her out barefoot, and before I could turn on the large patio light, I heard rustling and Sadie making chase toward the back of our lot where she rarely is in a hurry to go. I catch a glimpse of something really wide and seemingly tall and thought, “Oh NOOOO! It's a raccoon and she'll be ripped to shreds.” At that moment it turned its extra wide body, and I saw the distinctive white on black stripes. I called to her in desperation to come, but it was too late…
From the base of the black fuzzy mass, a shiver began, and extended within a millisecond straight up the tail, and I knew she had just been hit head-on, in the face with the spray of a skunk three times her width and height. A millisecond later, she was spinning with her nose in the grass trying to rid herself of the most repugnant stench one will EVER experience in their lifetime.
I didn't know what to do, so I picked her up arms strategically outstretched, keeping her at a distance. Into our over-sized kitchen-sink she went. It just so happened that I actually bought tomato paste this past week. An item I almost never buy. In a panic, I opened each can of tomato paste and smeared it thickly over her face and body hoping that what I'd heard about it was true, and praying that I could hold back the projectile vomit I felt creeping up my throat long enough to do what needed to be done.
As I applied coat after coat, and rinsed the potent slimy residue down the sink, I began to worry about blindness, suffocation, and whether Sadie might vomit from the direct hit she just took. Then I realized it was nearly 1 A.M.! My in-laws would be arriving in a matter of hours! And though I was able to cut Sadie's skunkiness down by half (which, with the magnitude of spray she received isn't saying much), the skunky odor had managed to infiltrate my entire house, and all the cleaning I had done to prepare for their arrival was now rendered pointless! I flew to work opening all the windows. On went the fans, and out came the Febreze, but still the skunky stench clung to the air without relenting!
I had done everything I could, and it was getting later by the minute, so further research on killing the residual odor still taking up residence on my cute little Sadie's face and in my home would have to wait until the morning.
As soon as I could get to my computer in the A.M., I was looking up de-skunking remedies, and found one that thankfully worked quite well. Not only was Sadie happy once she realized that the odor faded after just one application, but Farley and Vinnie also welcomed her back with open paws and lots of licks and love. Her overnight pariah status had ended. By the time my in-laws arrived, the scent in our house was reduced to a faint odor, akin to that of a passing skunk in the night (or the light salon smell of burning human hair, which is oh so lovely, but still a far cry better than what it had been just hours ago).
Although the tomato sauce was effective and saved little Sadie from two days of blindness, which is apparently common from being sprayed in the face, it was not as effective as the simple house-hold remedy I found via the nifty little inter-web.
When Skunks Attack Solution: In a bowl, mix 1 Quart Hydrogen Peroxide*; ¼ cup Baking Soda; 1 tsp. liquid soap. Apply avoiding eyes, mouth and nose.
For smaller dogs (like Sadie at only 4lbs. soaking wet), you can reduce the Hydrogen peroxide to a quarter of that called for, and still have a lot left over. The great part about this solution is that most of us have all the ingredients in our house, and like MacGyver, we can throw it all together and save the day!
