Before going to Sky Academy, I watched the BBC documentary “Drowning in Plastic” to obtain a better understanding of the impact of plastic pollution. Wildlife biologist, Liz Bonnin investigates and uncovers just how serious the plastic being in our oceans is and what this means for the future.

I wanted to make this short video, rather than using bullet points to relay the facts in a more engaging way.

The statistics are staggering:

This documentary has opened my eyes and was definitely not an easy watch, but a recommended one. It was heart-breaking to see how we are destroying our planet and its wildlife. Engineers have developed technology such as sea bins to collect the plastic before it enters our oceans. Another resolution is using seaweed for packaging and disposable cups. Several people around the world are coming up with these solutions, however much more needs to be done. As Liz said, something has to change before it’s too late.

Trip to Sky Academy

With Sky being advocates for tackling plastic pollution, having launched the Sky Ocean Rescue project, our task was to create a short documentary/elevator pitch concerning the plastic pollution problem and our solution to this. We were split into groups and had to work under pressure with a short deadline. We managed to work together and filter through ideas, choosing the best one which we feel would have a wider reach.

Roles:

- Producer: Liz

- Camera Operator: Abbas

- Editor: Tila

- Reporters: Natalie (me), Shanieka, Kimelle

Our idea was inspired from Abbas’ original thought of having water tanks sponsored by brands (such as Evian) in supermarkets. You would bring your own reusable bottle to the station and therefore reduce the amount of plastic being wasted. We expanded on this idea, deciding to not place the water tanks in supermarkets but dotted around in public areas around the city of London and spread this nationwide. Our project name was kept sharp and simple, “Top-up Water Stop” with our Twitter hashtag - #WaterStop.

This was a very enjoyable task as we got to utilise the camera equipment, see the functioning of green screens and use the editing software.

It was a fun, action packed day at Sky Academy as we all made our own movie trailers in their hi-tech studios.

Getting to direct some of the other actors in my group, (not with a camera) was great also. It was also my first time acting in front of the camera.

The main highlights were learning how to work with a green screen, editing and wearing whacky attire from the dressing room.

Overall Sky, would be a great place to work.
