Kevin Smith and Jeff Anderson while shooting Clerks. This was a high water mark in slacker movies, though it just occurred to me what an idiot I am to use the term "high water mark" to describe a movie about unambitious people. I'm a yutz. Anyway, Clerks was also a masterpiece of independent film making, produced for less than $28,000, mostly financed with credit cards, comic book sales, and family members. The film earned more than $3 million at the box office, and Smith sold it for $227,000 with a deal for royalties. With Hollywood leaning toward at least some creative use of AI, I hope we're entering a renaissance of independent productions shot on people's phones.
