Lifelong Mistake

Mutant green eyes practically glowed in the shadows of the alley of the castle town. She waited patiently for the king’s arrival, certain that he would take his usual route to the pub. Citizens went by without much mind, hurrying to their homes as the nightlife practically drifted past the others in a half awake daze. Roxy hadn’t really bothered to make much contact with Ravio due to all of the strange incidents that had occurred in her country, although she sent the occasional letter letting him know she wasn’t dead in a gutter or in jail somewhere. It wasn’t that she wanted to avoid him, of course that nerd would always be someone she trusted. The issue wasn’t him, but rather her. Certain baggage she had desperately tried to cover up was beginning to rear its head. She knew she had to come clean eventually, but there was a lingering fear that maybe, just maybe, he wouldn’t fully understand and his empathy would run short. The possibility was small, but it existed, and that was enough to send her into panic at the mere thought of it all.
Her head perked up in attention when Roxy faintly heard a distant chirp followed by the familiar worn out yet jolly voice. The traveler was quick to move, stepping out of the alley as she moved to her pocket and withdrew a flask. Her heart was racing, as if she would cough it up from sheer anxiety. She reached up to Ravio once she was close enough and gave him a pat on the shoulder, followed by a poke on Sheerow’s back. She tried to smile, but it was hard to. It simply came off tired and worn out no matter how much effort she put into it. So instead of making things awkward, she lifted her flask to eye level. “You go to the same bar just about every day. Don’t you ever get tired of it? I wanna try something different, like not making a spectacle of ourselves when we get smashed in public or listen to Raptor or the elder’s word poison. Just you and me talking about life in private. I broke out the good stuff today too, so don’t you dare say no.” Roxy handed the king her flask, stopping in her tracks before beckoning him to come closer. “And I swear if you get drunk this time of all times I’m just going to leave you wherever you end up.”
