You never meant to get yourself a slave. Not that you hated them, but you just didn't find the need for one. You had a good job, you took care of your home, and your life was just, well, good?
"I'm thinking about getting a new slave." Your friend, or rather, a co-worker, said as he took a bite of his lunch.
You raised a questioning brow as you looked at him, "Didn't you just get a new one?"
"Yeah, but I don't like it. It has a nasty attitude." He said, and you frowned a little as you took a bite of your own meal, "So? You're getting rid of it because it doesn't listen to you?"
"The seller told me that it would pass, that it would turn into a docile creature, but it's been a month already, and it is still so hostile."
"Damn, that's tough," Your other co-worker said, and the man nodded, "Yeah, I doubt the slavemarket wants it back, so I'm just going to drive it somewhere and let it go."
"Isn't that illegal?"
"Who cares?" He shrugged, "No one cares what happens to it. No one would notice if I just let it go and let the sun do its job."
You felt sick to your stomach as you listened to this jackass talk about someone so carelessly. This slave he had gotten, no matter what, was still a living creature with feelings.
"If you don't want it, I'll take it?" You suddenly found yourself saying, much to your and your co-workers' shock.
"Wait, really?" The man smiled, "You would do that for me?"
You rolled your eyes. Of course, he thought he was a real catch and the hero of the story, but you saw him more as an annoying pest.
"I have been thinking about getting a Demon for a while." You lied effortlessly, "Why not take yours?"
"Thanks! You're really helping me!" The guy said, and you tried your hardest not to roll your eyes. Instead, you both planned how and where to switch the Demon's ownership.
And so, a day passed, and came the day you'd get your first Demon. Your co-worker would bring it to your address, and you would take it off his hands.
While you waited for him to come, you prepared your apartment for the Demon. Making sure that the sun's light didn't get in and that your fridge had meat for the Demon.
Finally, your doorbell rang and you rushed to open the door. You weren't surprised to see your co-worker, but this Demon he had? What the Hell had he been feeding to the Demon? He was huge!
"Here it is," Your co-worker grunted as he smacked the back of the Demon's head, "Try to behave here, you shithead."
The Demon scowled as he looked down at his bare feet, and you immediately made a note to buy him shoes.
"Thank you for bringing him here." You nodded as you stepped aside and motioned the Demon to enter your humble home. He did as you wanted, quietly entering your apartment.
"So, we see again at work?" Your co-worker asked, and you nodded, "Yep."
"Hey, uh... If you want, I could take you out sometime? Maybe-!"
"Sorry, but I'm not interested in dating anyone right now."
Especially an asshole like him.
With that, you closed your door in front of his face and turned to address the Demon standing before you.
"So, uh..."
What a good start.
"Do you have a name?"
"..." The Demon raised his head a little, and you were taken aback by the glare he shot at you.
"...Genya..." He finally replied, and you nodded, "Okay. Are you hungry? I have some meat in the fridge for you, if you'd like?"
Genya scowled, but before he could reply, his stomach did that for him, growling loudly. The Demon grunted as his cheeks burned in embarrassment, but you didn't mind it.
"Please, sit on the couch, and I'll bring you some." You said, and the Demon nodded as he took a seat, and you stepped into your kitchen and started to prepare meat for your new companion.
While you were there, Genya looked around your humble home, noting that you had lots of books, a nice big TV, and comfy couches... But he couldn't trust anyone, even you.
You entered the living room with a plate filled with meat and set the plate before him on the coffee table.
"Please eat as much as you want. There is more in the fridge if you're still hungry after this."
Genya was scowling as he eyed the plate, but his hunger was stronger than he thought, and he found himself engulfing the whole plate in a matter of minutes.
He expected you to scold him for making a mess, for eating like an animal...! But you just looked at him curiously as he ate.
"Do you want more?" You asked once he was done with his plate, but the Demon shook his head, and you nodded as you reached to take the plate back to the kitchen.
But just as you turned your back to him, Genya grunted, "What the fuck are you planning to do to me...?"
"Language," You tutted before replying, "I'm going to take care of you, and if you want, I think we could maybe become friends?"
"I don't want your pity...!" He growled, and you sighed, "I'm still going to take care of you. You deserve good things also."
The Demon looked genuinely confused by your words, but he hid his confusion quickly with a frown and glare, "Do what you want..."
You would. Genya was way taller than you were and no doubt stronger, but you didn't let that bother you. You made him a bed on the couch as you didn't have a spare room, but it was way more than Genya had ever gotten.
Time passed, and Genya remained hostile and surly towards you, but you didn't let his actions get to you. You understood that he most likely came from an abusive home, his scars were proof of that, and he was just acting the only way he knew how to.
You had your past, also, and you understood that sometimes people, even Demons, acted the way they were because they were hurt or scared.
...But you didn't give up on him. You fed him 5 times a day, got him new clothes, and even started to teach him how to read. It was pretty common that Demons weren't taught how to read or such. People thought that slaves didn't need to read, but you thought that the chance to learn belonged to everyone.
He was very frustrated with his inability when it came to reading, but instead of scolding or calling him stupid, you were patient and understanding with him.
Slowly, he became less and less hostile towards you, and it started to show. He would sit closer to you when eating, reading, or simply watching television, and he took more and more curious glances at you.
He was obviously curious about you, and it was honestly pretty cute for a Demon his size.
"Mistress...?" Genya tried to get your attention, and you put the book in your hands down so you could give him all of your attention, "Yes, Genya?"
"Could you...?" He frowned as he pulled a book from behind his back and offered it to you, "Could you help me read this...?"
He was obviously embarrassed, blushing, and not looking at you in the eyes, but you just smiled as you made room for him on the couch, "Of course. Sit here, and we can look at it together?"
The Demon nodded humbly as he sat down next to you, and you noted that he had picked one of your storybooks from the shelf.
It was actually a really old book, and it showed in how the pages had almost turned yellow, and there were tears on the covers here and there.
You couldn't help but smile when you looked at the book in your hands. It was the "Grimms' Fairy Tale" book that your grandpa used to read to you when you were just a small girl.
"Is there a story that caught your attention, or would you like to start from the beginning?" You asked, and the Demon nodded humbly, "Read me your favorite ones...?"
"Alright," You smiled as you nodded and started to go through the book, searching for your favorite stories and then reading them to Genya.
A couple more weeks went by, and Genya managed to quickly read on his own, and he turned out to be quite a bookworm. It made you happy to see him read so much since there could never be too much knowledge.
Then, one night, you woke up in the middle of the night with a need to use the restroom. So you left your room and made your way to the restroom... But as you walked, you heard sobbing.
You stopped dead in your tracks and stepped into the living room, and you realized that it was actually Genya who was crying and trying his hardest not to make too many sounds...
"Genya?" You called gently, and the Demon flinched and quickly inhaled as he tried to stop crying at once. He didn't get up or anything. Perhaps he thought that if he stayed down and was quiet, then you would leave him be... But you knew better.
"Genya, sweetie..." You frowned as you turned the lights on and walked to the couches, but as soon as you sat down, you noticed that the Demon was hiding under his blanket.
"Genya?" You asked gently and he replied quietly under the covers, "G- Go away...!"
"Would you like to tell me what has made you so upset?" You frowned as you looked at the blanket where he was hiding, "Is something wrong? Did I do something to make you cry?"
"I- It's not you..."
"What is it then? I can't help you unless I know what you want me to do...?"
"I-!" He hiccupped, "I miss... I miss my family...!"
"Oh..." Your frown deepened as you registered his words, and your heart felt tight in your chest.
"You have a family?"
"Had..." Genya sounded so heartbroken as he continued, "Humans, they separated us when we were small... Took us apart..."
"I see..." You really did understand. This might have been the sole reason why Genya was so hostile at first.
"Did you have a big family?" You asked, and he sniffled, "There were 7 of us..."
Wow, that was a huge family to lose. Your heart really hurt as you listened to Genya name all his younger siblings and one big brother. He spoke so highly of them, and it was no secret he loved them dearly.
Finally, he peeked from under his blanket, and you felt bad as you saw how puffy his eyes had gotten due to crying.
"I'm just..." He gasped for breath, "I'm scared of what happened to them... They didn't ask to be born into Demons...! They don't deserve slavery...!"
"I understand..." You nodded sadly when an idea came to you. It was far-fetched, but not impossible.
"Genya, if you like, we could search for your family?"
"W- What...?" He looked genuinely shocked, and you smiled kindly as you nodded, "Yes. When I took you to live with me, I got your information also. There should read which slave market you originally came from, and if we know that, then maybe we could use the information to search for your family?"
"A- Are you serious?" Genya asked as he pulled the blanket off him, "Y- You would do that for me...?"
"In a heartbeat," You replied with an honest smile, "We can start at once."
"Don't you need to sleep first...?"
"I'm wide awake now." You replied, "So, might as well start now. Just let me use the bathroom quickly, and I'll go get my laptop."
The Demon nodded, and you got up and moved to go to the bathroom, but before you got far, you heard Genya call after you.
"Mistress- I... Thank you...!"
You looked at him over your shoulder and smiled, "Anything for you, Genya."
You swore you would find his family and reunite them. No matter how much paperwork had to be done, money to spend, or digging around you had to do, you would find Genya's family.
