seven day sleep challenge
hey everybody. so i’m taking an honors religion course this semester, which is part of my core curriculum. the professor has multiple extra-credit assignments available, like going to certain campus events and writing reflections. however, one that she does is particularly unique: the seven-day sleep challenge. the rules are as follows:
1. every day for seven days, get more than eight hours of sleep.
2. keep a short journal every morning recording how you feel.
the reason she offers this extra-credit, she says, is that students today are more overworked than they ever have been previously. we don’t realize how much of our performance depends on being rested – research shows that being consistently sleep-deprived can give you the same performance as someone who is drunk or stoned.
when my professor was in graduate school, she was taking Hebrew, a notoriously difficult language to learn. her class was at 8am every day and had daily graded homework. she had to leave her house at 6:30 to be there on time and get parking. so at some point, after long nights slogging through translations, that she was just going to sleep whenever she needed to sleep, whether or not her homework was finished. and miraculously, as she told us, her grade went up – despite the fact that sometimes she didn’t complete her homework.
as for me – i’ve been feeling pretty sick lately; like immediately after i got back to campus i somehow got a cactus or something in my throat. So I definitely need more sleep, and I’m going to do this seven day sleep challenge to kick the semester off, especially as I have time to do it now before the curriculum really heats up. i would encourage y’all to do it as well!
