Imagine if we were all born with exactly the same ability to run as fast as Usain Bolt, to swim as quick as Micheal Phelps, to play tennis like Serena Williams. I’ve spoken about this topic many times this week and I wasn’t quite sure what I was trying to gain or conclude from it but I’ve got it now! If we were all born with the same ability would the athletic clubs be full up? Would the 10,000m final be Mo Farah plus 1000 other people because everyone was born with that ability...? No and this is where real life comes into it- you might have someone who IS actually born better at swimming than Rebecca Adlington or better at running than Paula Radcliffe however over the years of our childhood we TAKE opportunities or CREATE barriers. Think of it like a hurdle race, when we are born, all the babies on the start line, no hurdles at all. Over the years hurdles pop up and it is our decision to knock them down or sit behind it and let the hurdle grow. I’m not necessarily talking about becoming an Olympic athlete or a F1 race car driver just talking about opportunities, don’t make excuses because if you ARE able it is only your mind holding you back. If your child wants to go running early on a Saturday morning in the park for the fun run, take them, they might not be the next Farah and you know that but it is an opportunity which can and will open up many more than you having a Saturday morning lie in. You won’t look back and think that was a fabulous lie in on Saturday 23rd January 1998, you’ll look back and think I’m glad I took Mildred to that run on a cold winter morning because there she met Peter and Peter invited her to his ice skating party and now she is world champion at figure skating, we would never of known!! When I was 17 I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy, over the last few years my condition has become so much worse. If someone said 4 years ago, you will fall asleep uncontrollably 10-12 times a day and you will not be able to function without medication, I would of cried and probably given up on any sort of occupation, let alone striving for a successful career. But as I have taken every single day as it comes, I've grown with my condition, I've grown to accept it, live with it, talk about it and work with it. So, whats the relation to this quote? Well when I am feeling sleepy, groggy, sad and just like I literally want to go to bed for a whole year and never wake up, I KNOW that after doing a workout or just a little bit of physical activity, I will feel energised, awake and far from a narcoleptic girl. I feel great when I run, when I jump, when I box - do you know why?! Because I can! I might have to sleep 10 times a day for 10 minutes but when I feel awake I want to make the most of it before I have the feeling of being woken from general anesthetic. I sometimes say to people I would love to sit in class at school for 2 hours and concentrate for the whole 2 hours (maybe not physics 😋) but that's only because I know I can't do that now! So please, if you can run, run! If you can jump, jump! You will only regret it when you can't do it! Do something about it now before it's too late! 💪🏼 Live an active life, it's so worth it!
