In any other situation, she thinks, the roles would be reversed. It would be her carefully picking through the crime scene, magnifying glass held fast in a gloved hand. She would be the one gliding past restricted areas, yellow police tape setting the boundaries of her stage. But this was not home and her name, unfortunately, held no weight.
Regardless of the petty and childish frustrations that welled in her bosom, Naoto could find no fault with the woman standing before her, for at a single glance she could tell that the lead investigator on this case was the embodiment of everything she hoped to be in the future.
And perhaps that was why she was so eager to lend her assistance rather than begrudgingly resign herself to playing the part of the citizen as she would be predisposed towards doing had it been any other.
“Around 2:15 p.m. the suspect was loitering at the sandwich vendor,” she extends her hand outward in order to direct gazes towards the facility “Right next to the alley in which the crime took place.”
“He stood at roughly 5′5, with fair skin and dark hair. From the distance I was sitting at the time I couldn’t discern any notable facial features. Clothing of note includes a brightly colored two-toned hoodie; red and yellow, in some sort of pattern, torn jeans, and white sneakers.”
“After standing idle for about ten minutes, having made no purchase from the stand, he seemed increasingly nervous. Checking his watch, looking over his shoulder. He received a phone call, which he seemed hesitant to answer. Once it ended he turned and walked into the alleyway.”
“If I may suggest, your first lead after finding him would lay in the suspect’s cell phone and who it was who had called him prior to the crime. It could be that this was an isolated incident, but part of something on a grander scale.”
Ah, but perhaps that was out of line? But no more so than what Naoto did next, hand over her heart as she made her plea. Was it guilt for not having done anything to help the situation before it had come to this point? Or a fit of idolatry, self-excused by the desire to get back on her feet and resume her work?
“Now that my statement has been given, I implore you! Allow me to work on this case at your side!”
