On the note of misogynistic old man music critics: given that he’s in the news again for his bigotry and general total lack of professionalism getting him fired from the BBC, I’ve always been surprised at how many classical music fans on here (even some who seem to have been that for decades!) will link Norman Lebrecht / Slipped Disc freely. When his utter contempt for women and racial and gender/sexual minorities (going way beyond “woke has gone too far” or whatever) and bullying and other bad behavior have been well known for years among actual professional classical musicians, music academics and his fellow critics. (It’s also not exactly hard to find in his writing?) Like there are a lot of people linking him here he’d hate. It really shows how often professional whisper networks don’t make it down to fans… not helped by institutions also ignoring them whenever it’s more convenient to do so. “Good” on the BBC for finally doing the right thing I guess? Could’ve come like a decade or more ago though?!?
