RWBY RAGORA’S ALLUSION
Last but certainly not least, we finish our SLVR analysis with Ragora. Her allusion took me years to find because she me the only one whose allusion isn’t already stated on the SLVR pages on the RWBY OC Wiki, so I had to do the digging myself. I knew it had to be someone related to witchcraft, but in hindsight it was a little obvious. Ragora is based on Hecate, the Greek Goddess of witchcraft, magic, crossroads, and the moon.
The most telling reference is her witch theme. Her design has dark lengthy clothing, a scarf, and a pointed hat. These clothes are often associated with witches. Her music incorporates a piano tune, which could invoke the idea of magic. Her final attack definitely gave Halloween/Wicked vibes, as she resembles a witch riding a broom.
She can summon a Familiar, a horned monster-sheep-dog-like creature as her companion. Hecate is often connected to a Horned God, acting as her male companion. Ragora’s summon is also male, and she refers to him as “Cormo”, a breed of sheep.
Her weapon has a marking of 3 lines. Which would seem random considering it’s not her symbol. But it could allude to Hecate being depicted as having three bodies.
Mandrake plants are heavily associated with magic. Hecate often associated with the mandrake, which scientific name is Mandragora Offcinarum. Ragora Cinarum’s name is derived from this. She even has a mandrake on her hat.
Hecate is often linked with Hermes as Greek deities associated with the underworld, crosswords/paths, magic/alchemy, and the moon. This explains why Ragora & Simin are on the same team, and are the first to interact with each other. Hecate, as well as witches in general, are associated with the moon, which ties Ragora within her team’s moon theme.
Lysette based on Ugly Duckling as well as & Swan Lake, a ballet about a princess who was turned into a swan by a sorcerer. Her design has features that invoke both royalty and swans. Ragora, with her witch aesthetic, represents the sorcerer. Their music themes are even fighting. When Lysette enter/attacks a slower mellow piano melody is played. Her theme clashes with Ragora’s theme when they fight. This is a common thing done in RWBY proper.
Ragora is the second character to share an allusion with a character from RWBY proper. Simon, Mark’s first character for Team SLVR, shares this trait with Mercury Black. Simin is based on Hermes, the Greek depiction of the figure, while Mercury is based on the Roman depiction. Ragora is based on Hecate, the Greek depiction of the figure. Neo is based on Trivia, the Roman depiction. You can see some shared traits, like the magic/weird powers with Neo’s illusions, the horned companions with the Jabberwalkers, etc. So that makes it a little less confusing. PSA: if you want to make OCs, it’s okay to have shared references.
And that’s that! Simin, Lycan, Vella, and Ragora from Mark Zhang’s SLVR Trailers finally complete. The SLVR series is an iconic and important piece of RWBY’s history, as it is considered the peak of RWBY fan-created content, something the show heavily encourages. Thanks again for tuning in.
