I think the trio of Satoshi, Suiren and Mao might be my fav group dynamic 👀 I love how well they all click with each other.

The Suiren and Mao and Drampa stuff was super cute and all, but what really stood out to me about Sun&Moon episode 59 was the directing when it came to the group’s Pokemon. Typically in the Pokemon anime Pikachu and his fellow main cast Mons just tend to kinda mimic the actions of their trainers, unless they themselves are the point of focus. Pikachu would constantly be on Satoshi’s shoulder, match his expressions or react to them, and discussions between humans or exposition scenes would just be static shots of them talking. Sun&Moon has already been better at this than previous series due to its stationary setting allowing for the Pokemon to spend more down time out of their Pokeballs, but the execution was especially seamless in this episode. When Lilie asks Mao and Suiren if they ever met the mystery Pokemon again and Mao answers her, we get this panning shot rather than seeing them actually talk.
While Suiren is pressing her desire to go thank it for saving her sisters, we see something else happening in the background.
Through out the part where the kids are walking in the forest and discussing the mystery Pokemon and the day Mao and Suiren met, we get several shots of Pikachu, Popplio and Steenee walking ahead of them doing their own thing, interacting with each other and random wild Pokemon, and at one point Steenee even breaks away from THAT group and observes a flower by herself, creating a third layer into one shot, none of this is done to interrupt the flow of the plot, there’s always dialogue or other proggress happening at the same time.
It’s not until Mao literally stops to tell them that they now know what to look for and to come along, that they start paying attention to their trainers.
And they’re then the ones who, without even being asked to help, catch a whiff of the berries and lead the way by themselves.
And even at the end when Drampa has been found they’re still doing their own thing.
It’s a simple and kind of a subtle touch but stuff like this really makes the show more visually engaging and helps make the Pokemon themselves feel real~
Satoshi is so guillable he even believes Suiren telling him she used to be an Ametama shdkdvdkdvdjdvsk
I’M SORRY I CAN’T GET OVER THE FACT THAT
KAKI GOT SO SCARED OF MAO’S YELL OF REALISATION THAT HE’S HOLDING A POLE FJKHSFHSFHSFKJFKJ.
