Malaysian tech team to leave for Kiev soon
The technical team to help in the investigation of the crashed Malaysia Airlines (MAS) plane is expected to leave for Kiev later this evening.
According to a MAS official, they are still waiting for overflight permission as the airline does not fly that route.
He added that they also needed to get permission from the Ukrainian authorities for the equipment that they would be taking into the country.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said early this morning that a special flight to Kiev would have the Special Malaysia Disaster and Rescue Team (SMART) and a medical team on board.
This was further reiterated by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai at the second press conference on the tragedy that struck the Boeing 777 aircraft as it was enroute to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.
The flight which was a codeshare with Dutch airline’s KLM was carrying 298 people on board, 173 of them were from the Netherlands and 44 Malaysians.
MH17 was expected to arrive at the KL International Airport (KLIA) at 6.10am today.
Reports thus far have said the plane was shot down over Ukrainian airspace. However, in both press conferences given by the Malaysian government, this had yet to be verified.
