The latest album from Smashing Satellites is suitably titled SonicAluzion. It has this weird mix of horror musical and fun, dance-y pop music with some songs even featuring the two combined. The songs tend to keep the listener on their toes. At times the words are just on constant repeat, while at others, it slows down for a little breather. Either way you’ll never know what to expect.

Things immediately kick off with a pretty intense song called “Waterfall.” There’s tons of energy and emotion holding it up; it’s really hard hitting. I particularly love the music in the background. It’s got a solid ground to it with a little tinge of anger.

“Like a Feather” really shows off lead singer Salvatore Costa’s vocals. It almost reminds me of some type of scary musical, like Sweeney Todd. His voice has a real smoothness to it and he can really drag out those notes to perfection with such force. It’s a little reminiscent of alternative band, Get Scared.

One of my favourite songs off the album is “Calm Me Down.” It starts off with this creepy intro of someone reciting a sort of poem, then emerges into their typical sound with much livelier music behind it. Around the chorus it takes a turn and slows down into boy band R&B which makes for a great transition into their dual sound.

Since this was my first time listening to Smashing Satellites, I was completely caught off-guard when the guys switched things over to this sort of indie rock. As soon as “Living Louder” started I couldn’t believe it was still the same band. The rest of the album follows the same style—a happier and more energetic sound.

Smashing Satellites will definitely keep you on your toes. Whether it’s through dancing or the dramatic switch between creepy and dance-y, your ears will be interested to hear more. Although I’d love to hear more of their dark side, I can’t help but appreciate their lively and fun songs. Each of their different musical sides make for an interesting combination.

I must say that anyone who likes to check out new music needs to look up Canadian band Smashing Satellites. Their album SonicAluzion comes out tomorrow, and it is absolutely FANTASTIC! When I saw them live in May they put on one heck of a show, and are very nice people to talk to and hang out with.

Interview With Smashing Satellites

As part of the portfolio, we are asked to conduct an interview with someone (a musician) in the music industry, of which we can find out more about them. With already having contacts with PR companies from my work experience placement, this part was not difficult.

It was just a matter of researching the recent activities of the band, Smashing Satellites in terms of new music, influences and other questions that would gather more information for the interview and topics that people may not have necessarily got into when previously interviewing the band. A number of 20 questions were written, ready to be sent over to recieve answers. 

Doing the research was interesting as I wanted to ask questions that they probably wouldn’t have been asked all the time, but then wanted to keep it to the point of finding out what they’re up to when it comes to their music.

Luckily there wasn’t long to wait before getting back responses which then meant that I was able to write up a written interview of around 1,000 words.
