hey! just wondering how you construct your social media aus. I've been trying to get into fic writing and it seems like one of the easier things to do, but I don't really know how to make one - apologies if this is rude (social anxiety showing)
ofc this isn’t rude!!! gate keeping ain’t it!
i think every smau is widely different, some people like to use actually ig templates and stuff but i think the easiest is having a photo collage of the photos you want for a post, not individual ones combined cus there’s a limit on how much you can have in one post.
as for captions and stuff, i like play around with the italics, indents, and font sizes.
in terms of getting pictures, pinterest is the holy grail and ig itself isn’t bad if you can’t find what you exactly want.
if you’re looking face claims, pinterest is definitely good but sometimes you need to scour ig for certain peeps. i have a board full of way too many face claims. if i see someone i think is good on ig or even tiktok, i pop their name into pinterest or ig and try to accumulate photos!
for stories some make it on ig or some on Canva, either works tbh. and for dms, it’s also the matter of fonts sizes, italics and what not.
for tweets, most people use an online generator and there are loaddddds lying around!
smaus don’t really require much of a plot, at least personally. i think it just needs to be coherent enough? like we’re seeing the reader and the point of the smau clearly.
hope that helps but feel free to ask or message any other questions! ♡︎
You know them, you love them-- Social Media AU's, better known by their acronym SMAU, are a hugely popular type of fanfic. They can also be a little daunting if you've never made one before (I would know lol!) So, I've compiled a list of tips + tricks and resources I wish I would have known about prior to making Why Else Would We Have Met.
If there is something on this list that you feel is missing, I'd love to hear from you so that I can add it. ❀.(*´◡`*)❀.

Plan out a chunk of the story before anything
Make a note to yourself for what you want each screenshot to convey
Keep tabs on how different characters type
Showing character profiles before the story starts is a fun way to get people acquainted w/ your characters before the story begins
Use real social media as reference
Use other SMAU as reference
Adding a masterlist is helpful for both the reader + you
Tumblr can only fit 10 images at a time, if you want to post more than that in one go use a side-by-side collage maker like Kapwing
The most important thing is that you are having fun ♡
