Origins of Maha Rakta (ཚོགས་བདག)

When a demon named Vinayaka rampaged through Tibet, terrorised the innocent and destroyed temples of the Buddha, the prayers of the people were heard by the gods. In order to bring peace back to the lands, Avalokitesvara, the Protector of the World descended to the Earth. After waging a long war against the demon, he was subdued. Upon the demon’s death, Avalokitesvara assumed the form of Maha Rakta to celebrate his victory. Along with the goddess, Kurukulla and the god, Takiraja, Maha Rakta is one of the Three Great Red Ones in Tibetan Buddhism.
