GODDAMN IT I WAS RAISED TOO CATHOLIC FOR THIS. I AM TOO ENMESHED WITH THE SAINT IMAGERY THAT FOLLOWS AGNES TO UNTANGLE MY EMOTIONS ABOUT THIS.

I’m part way between agree & neutral. It depends on how AU the Gertrude/Agnes shipping is.

Jack Barnabas loving Agnes is very thematically satisfying. Agnes is surrounded by deity iconography, she is the Messiah who is fed upon worshipful candlelight. And there’s Jack, who loved her from afar without really knowing her. Who followed her orders, but innocently. He is the one follower who never had an ulterior motive. He never wanted to use her, for anything. He just wanted to be near her. In whatever way she wanted. He was normal- and he wasn’t normal.

I think it’s wistfully beautiful, tragic and melancholic and sweet.

Gertrude, who ate the bare minimum of statements to stay alive, who never developed her powers but used mundane means to achieve her goals. Agnes, who could have burned so bright but limited her appetite to candles given to her in tribute. Both fed on the bare minimum, starving themselves of their Gods attentions purposefully. Gertrude who used fire to cleanse the world, opposed to Agnes who never willingly used fire but dirtied everything with sullen smoke that clung to her and would never leave her be.

Gertrude, who was action, and Agnes, who was waiting. Gertrude, who grew old, and Agnes, who never changed.

I think if Gertrude and Agnes are given the AU where they talk, then Smokeyes all the way. But given what we actually have in canon, I weep over Jack Barnabas. I love it. The only way it could have possibly been better is the addition of church iconography. There’s so much there I can’t express.

It’s like- It’s like if there’s a Saint, a Messiah, who gains a rabid following. And that following isn’t actually doing what the Messiah preached at all but was convinced they were doing everything for the glory of their Messiah. And along comes a little non believer. Who’s nothing, and has nothing. But follows what the Messiah actually says. The Followers are convinced the Messiah wants blood, conquest, destruction. And the non believer accidentally dutifully follows the actual Commandments without realizing what they’re doing- to have a nice day in the park. To go for a walk. To enjoy the world. To leave no trace, and simply have a peaceful time.

I could cry just thinking about it. I’m surrounded by people who are so sure Jesus wants nuclear war, and atheists who follow Jesus’s actual words out of an innate kindness. I could just cry about Jack and Agnes.
