I recently listened this one on audio and am very glad I did. The exploration of sin vs. virtue was fascinating (and rather convicting at times), and the story was more entertaining than I expected, given that it's built around solving a mystery whose solution been common knowledge for more than a century. I also enjoyed the main character and some of the humor. But it's so weirdly paced--the mystery is just drawn out and drawn out for flimsy reasons (how many times can one man get letters saying 'don't open until my death'?)--and the ending, while unsettling in its abruptness, is extremely unsatisfying. How does Mr. Utterson react to all this?

I'm aware of the central conceit, but I don't really have any interest in reading it. A bit too devilish-sounding for me.

This might be the first book I ever bought for myself, and I loved it. I wound up getting rid of it over the years, but then came back to the series as an adult and fell back in love with it. The characters! The setting! The humor! One of those rare books that truly is for all ages! I like several of the later books in the series better, but this one kicks things off amazingly and deserves to be a classic.

This is such a fun book. What a great voice! That alone makes it a joy to read, but it's also fun to see what turn-of-the-century women's education was like, and see the development of her friendships and romance. I guessed the secret rather early on, and it does make some of the plot turns seem a bit skeevy, but the book is otherwise so fun that it's hard to mind. I rather like the musical as well.
