Gastropods have a very large, muscular foot, a fairly developed head with eyes, mouth, and tentacles, and carry their house around on their back in the form of a shell. Sound familiar? Gastropods are snails!  Like today, some snails live on land, and some in the water. These are known as Turritella and they lived towards the end of the Cretaceous, which ended about sixty five million years ago.

My late uncle used to be a “geologist” and used to find all kinds of neat things, like this fossil. It’s made entirely of teeny tiny snail shells.

This is what fossils look like after being thrown in a rock tumbler and polished.
