Microsoft Word has become Gilligan’s Island
Remember Gilligan’s Island? For those who don’t it was an American Sitcom about a two-man crew of the charter boat SS Minnow and five passengers. While on a cruise from Honolulu they run into a tropical storm and are shipwrecked on an uncharted island. The main gist of the story is everything was going well until the shipwreck and then they get stuck in a time warp trying to figure out how to escape.
Microsoft Word is like the crew on SS Minnow. During the 90’s things were great – the sun was shining and their passengers were happy until that dreaded Internet storm arrived and washed them onto ‘desktop’ island. The world moved on and got connected while Word (let’s call it Gilligan) just hung out with the Printer (mmm…the skipper?).
Poor Microsoft Word. If only it had been able to move with the times rating would not be waning. Yes – it is a sentimental favorite but does it deserve its prime time slot?
As a business owner a Word processor is a must have tool and like most I use Microsoft Word. But here is my problem – my customer’s information is in one place and I have to retype them into Word. Whenever I have to post a letter I still need to compose it in Word, print it out, hunt for a stamp and rush to the post office. My business productivity tools are just disconnected islands. Are we still in the 90’s?
In 2015, if Microsoft Word was not stuck on ‘desktop’ island it should be connected to all the main online CRM/Accounting platforms and mail merging should not make me angry. It should allow me to post letters that get printed and posted close to the destination, send emails with tracking and fax anywhere. Can I have digital signatures too please Mr Gates?

Microsoft – moving Word online with cloud document storage is not enough to get you out of the 90’s time warp. Word needs to live in a connected world where it is part of our eco-system so it speeds up our day rather than slowing it down. Only then can we say Microsoft Word has managed to get off ‘desktop’ island.
