Sneak Previews 1.1 Meaningless

The poor fool rolled around the walkway, laughing like the madman he clearly was. His hands were pressed against the back of his head, uselessly trying to keep the blood from leaving the hole in his head. “I'm free! I'm free!” he screamed over and over and he rolled around happily in a pool of his own blood. Several inches from him lay the node. It was the same as the ones on everyone else, a black dial roughly two centimeters in diameter and a red cap roughly one centimeter tall. From the sides of it hung many small, blue tendrils. The nodes were how the masters made sure that everything ran smoothly. But some people, like this man, did not appreciate what the masters did. People like him selfishly wanted to harm society.

The man's laughter faded as the blood loss took its toll on his body. Jimmy could feel the dial turn around the node on the back of his head. Jimmy compliantly stepped to the side as several armed soldiers stepped up to the body and dragged it away. Jimmy saw what resistance to the masters would bring: death. But still, just before dying, that man had seemed... happy. Not the happiness that the masters would allow through the use of the nodes. He seemed to show... true happiness.

Jimmy could feel the node on the back of his head adjust once again, and those traitorous thoughts were forgotten. He had always been loyal to the masters. He was always loyal to the masters. He would always be loyal to the masters.
