Spy x Family and the Canon of Code White (Not much of an issue, really….)
For some reason, every time someone brings up the Spy x Family movie, Code White, or something related to it, people are so quick to claim that it’s not canon and I have to ask: Why does it matter and why we should disregard anything that happens in this movie?
First of all, the franchise is no stranger to stories and events that didn’t occur in the manga. In fact, there’s actually some original content that’s actually tied in with what happened in the manga. Best example is Episode 5 in Season 1 where they greatly expanded on the chapter that celebrated Anya’s admission to Eden Academy with Loid reenacting her favorite hero, Bondman. There are several others such as Yor parkouring to Anya’s school, Anya’s dodgeball training montage, what Fiona’s doing while the Loid’s are on a cruise vacation, etc.
The most important thing about all these scenes, episodes, and the movie is that it can easily be implemented with no problem as it doesn't contradict anything and it could fit anywhere in the story, even after Bond is adopted.
Second, the movie is its own original story that can absolutely be an event that takes place within the main story. The anime and manga both have stories which are standalones, so Code White can be considered one of those standalone stories as well. More importantly, despite being classified as a shonen, it’s not a battle shonen where apart from timeline issues, they also have to worry about powerscaling. Spy x Family is just as episodic as it is progressive. The only thing we have to take account of is the portrayal of the cast that we have become accustomed to and everyone is on point and not out of character. In fact, some moments in this movie actually expands on some of these characters without conflicting with the source material.
Third and finally, the author, Tatsuya Endo, did design most of the characters that appear in the movie, particularly Snidel, Type-F, his two lackeys, and even an excrement deity. While the movie was written and directed by Takashi Katagiri from a screenplay by Ichiro Okouchi, Endo was the general supervisor of the film. Considering it’s his work, what he says goes. He even wrote a book that provides extra information on the characters and story. As far we are concerned, he didn’t disregard any related to this movie at all.
In short, while the movie didn’t occur in the manga, just like the anime-original content, it stays true to the source material with little moments that expands on what we already know about the characters just a little. If we have no problem accepting aforementioned stand alone stories in the manga and anime, then unless future statements or information have proven otherwise, the same can be done for this movie.
