A long one, and for most of it I’m complaining and/or paranoid. “Keep reading” only if you have the time.... For everyone else, suffice it to say that my students kicked butt again today, and it was nice out.

Most of the paraeducators at my school, including me, got a letter today, asking us about the next academic year: do we want fewer hours, more hours, or the same hours?

I was actually (finally!) nonplussed about something, for the first time in my life. (Nonplussed: “surprised and confused so much that they are unsure how to react.”)

Eight weeks ago was that meeting between myself, the union rep, my supervisor, and a rep from HR - all about how I miss too much work due to migraines, and I wasn’t working enough hours per week to qualify for the FMLA, and they might have to take action, etc.

I haven’t heard a word about it ever since. I check my “junk” email folders every day. Not a syllable. Eight weeks twisting. Of finishing all my journal entries with “HNS” for “Heard Nothing, Still.” And now I get an email asking me my intentions for the upcoming academic year? Pendejos.

My little brain is delighted to have new material to overthink. But first, it sensibly allowed me to write a response, asking politely for 7 hours/day, 35 hours/weekly, since that is the FMLA minimum. (Which I did NOT say in my request; give me a little credit!)

I have enough trust issues - this is magnifying them. I hate games. I hate the fact that the “field” of education is more concerned with the bureaucracy, than the students. And I hate most of all that as a poor divorced sexagenarian, I have no choice but to suck it all up and smile. If anyone would care to share a surefire method for winning the lottery, so I can retire - because that seems to be what it would take - please let me know!!
