Hey. I read your Utena analysis recently and I loved every word. Your breakdown of the series is incredible and was an absolute treat. I had a question regarding a small (and frankly kinda inconsequential) aspect of Utena that I don't see touched upon much. Utena was one of the final series to use paka-paka (strobing lights and flashing/subliminal imagery) before Cyber Warrior Porygon aired and led to the banning of such animation techniques. (1/2)

I was just wondering if you had any thoughts on Utena's usage of paka-paka (a great example of it would be the scene where Anthy is stabbed by the villages and the screen flashes between an intense red and a dark black), or perhaps thoughts on the technique in general as it was used in older anime (such as for bright strobing Ki attacks in Dragon Ball Z for instance, etc.) before Pokemon got the technique canned following the Pokemon Shock Incident.

That’s interesting! However, honestly, it’s not something I have a lot of knowledge about! I’m thankful that (as far as I know???) there wasn’t a widespread reaction to the scenes in Utena like there was for Pokemon, but that’s about the extent of my thoughts.

Tower of God episode 5 Followup

A few things! First: I’ve been informed that what happened with Bam at the end of the Crown Game was a mistranslation. From Snowwhistle: “ When Lero Ro was discussing Bam’s Shinsoo blast, he describes Bam as becoming Shinsoo. This is incorrect. In the manhwa, it’s worded that it was as if the Shinsoo acted of it’s own volition to protect Bam.“ Or possibly a retcon, but without more confirmation we’re going with mistranslation. Second: Episode 4 ended with Stab Happy asking Rachel if it was ok to kill all of them, and Rachel focusing on Bam while saying “of course”. Sooooo...at first I thought that that was just a completely dropped stinger. But actually it’s more of a bait and switch. TECH-NIC-ALLY (I say in a whiny nerd voice) the WORDS of the characters didn’t indicate that they meant “kill Bam”, that was just what you CHOSE to IN-TER-PRET from the camera zoom. But let’s be real, that’s a load of bull. They knew what they were doing. Cinematography is an art and a language and it relies on common understanding to be understood and if you abuse that understanding to lead people into valid assumption you don’t mean you’re just cheap and obnoxious. So yeah, look, the stingers here are kind of ridiculous and I’m going to grade them harshly on it. Asks and comments!

Hmmm. I’m still dark enough on what exactly is underlying all this that it doesn’t mean too much to me. Can’t, as in it’s not allowed, or can’t, as in physically impossible? Don’t answer that though!

I’m sure it does! To be honest I have a hard time focusing on pages though. Anime has sounds and moving images that keep my squirrel brain in one place! Also liveblogging gives me an excuse to actually watch stuff - I’d been so lethargic for years I could barely be bothered to even watch anime - and, hopefully, it provides entertainment for all ya’ll out there too! So I’m keeping to anime-only, spoilers-free =)

Huh, alright. I’d assumed water was its property since that had shown up several times, but if that’s wrong, then I’ll remember that.

I just read through your Madoka live blog and I really enjoyed it. I was an interesting perspective on the series. A bit of trivia about the train scene which I don't think anyone's mentioned- the conversation between the two guys was lifted almost verbatim from a real conversation that series writer Gen Urobutchi heard on a crowded train.

HOPEFULLY someday my shoulder will not be in excess pain and I can work on the Rebellion movie. Things are not looking particularly up for that though I still want to do it. Stuff like this reminds me why I want to though so thank you!!

A fun fact about the body swap Teen Titans episode. They were originally going to have the voice actresses for Starfire and Raven imitate the opposite character's way of speaking with their own character's voice during the body swap, but they found that the voice actresses were actually extremely good at imitating each other's character and were near indistinguishable from the original. Because of this, they decided to just have voice actresses retain their roles during the body swap.

Tara Strong and Hynden Walch are just too good at their job.

Speaking old tech, that "walkie talkie" wasn't actually a walkie talkie at all. It was a primitive cellphone that would've been available in 1996. It probably would've only been able to call other people. Isn't it amazing how far we've come!

Ah, you know, my first thought was that it was a cell but then I went “hey, this show was when I was like four, did we have cell phones that small back then?” And I suppose I guessed wrong lol.

Also I love the wording of this ask. “It probably would’ve only been able to call other people” like I’m so baby I’ve never heard of a non-smart phone. I’m flattered 😂

Hey, sorry. I didn't mean to sound patronizing in my ask. Turns out you're actually than I am if you were 4 in 1996 (was born in 1998, lol)! Japan in general was quicker to adopt cellphones than many countries including the US. But they were slower to make the switch from flip-phones and keypad phones to smart phones. If you watch anime from the late 2000s or early 2010s you can see many characters still using phones like that.

Oh, no worries, you didn’t sound patronising, I was kinda flattered you thought I was so young! Yeah, though, I was born in (very late) ‘92. That makes a lot of sense about the cell phones, and it’s cool to know, thank you!
