Ed and Stede had their first time today and you want me to go into work tomorrow?
Everything in the hospital looks the same; every floor and every ward, every bed, every expression. The sound of groans and pain and forcing strong smiles. I got off on the wrong floor and walked for a bit and past this elderly Lebanese woman in a bed weeping between screams. The nurse was trying to ask her what’s wrong but she kept calling for her son in Arabic. I translated for the nurse and then she started screaming for God to take her, to end the suffering and let her see her husband again. I held her hand and spoke to her in Arabic saying her son was coming back and she was going to be fine and God was going to cure her. The nurses gave her a shot of something and she screamed out a while longer and then stopped. I lied to her just before she died and her son came in and started crying and collapsed onto a chair before getting up and kissing her head before turning her body toward the Qiblah and reciting Surat Yasin. I left and got back into the lift and went to the right floor this time and didn’t mention a word of it.
