ahh (twirls hair) he was the second riddler i conceptualized so i have thought about it slightly more than others, i like to think ed is a programming student at some university and riddler was some sort of ambitious experiment on his part

a newly borned riddler (noting eds impressive intellect and friendless personality) tricks ed into feeding him peoples brain energy to make him stronger, first victim being his gal pal slash crush … do not leave people alone with your rogue ai experiments in a bid to impress them

as riddler gets more powerful i think he develops more cheesy paranormal-y powers, he sort of plugs himself into eds head in order to have a mobile meat suit he can partially control (either through mean verbal commands or by briefly possessing the body). when hes plugged in ed appears a bit more zombified than normal. ed has to carry riddler around in a sack and they both complain about it. they are a little funny duo
