EVERY INCH OF HIM ACHED IN PAIN.  Puck had suffered beatings in Blackgate before this. Had a terrible habit of speakin’ outta turn or hiding the television remote, pissing the wrong person off. It’d never been this bad, however. He had never had to be hospitalised before. NEVER HAD TO BE RESUSCITATED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN AMBULANCE. Machines beeped around him, monitoring his heartbeat to make sure it didn’t stop again and he struggled to sit up when his friend (and solicitor) mentioned his trial being re-opened. Did that mean he’d have to go back? HE CAN’T GO BACK TO BLACKGATE.  He’ll end up like his grandfather. Dead.

‘Please don’t make me go back there.’ There was desperation in his voice when he spoke. HE’S NORMALLY AN EXPERT AT DISGUISING HIS EMOTIONS.  Become a master at forced, false smiles and putting on a brave face. But now that same face was battered red, purple and blue, and he couldn’t keep fighting it. He couldn’t keep pretending he didn’t spend each passing second fucking terrified of what was gonna happen to him next. BLACKGATE WAS A PLACE FOR CRIME LORDS AND MURDERERS.  It wasn’t where he, a simple car thief, was supposed to die. ‘The judge hates me, Harv. He’ll send me back there. WEAVER WILL FINISH ME OFF.’
