"I missed the first 45 seconds of what you were saying because I was trying to figure out what to do."
I would like to share how bullying in my childhood affected my ability to sort myself. Itll be long so you dont have to post it. I just wanted to share my experience with someone! I was always an introspective and quiet kid and i lived in a very rural area. When i was 5 (in the mid 90s) i went to school for the 1st time. When my mom came to pick me up, i was crying bc everyone made fun of me. My mother went in and told off my teacher and then on the way home she said to me, “dont let those kids get to you. Maybe their parents are mean to them and so they only know how to be mean. Dont be mad at them or mean to them back. Be strong and kind.” I took that advice to heart until i was 10. The bullying was bad. I was very overweight w/ glasses, braces and frizzy, poofy hair. An easy target. When i hit 10, i got sick of it. Screw them. They want to make fun of me? Ill give them REASONS to do it. So i dressed in old boys clothes with holes and rips among other things. Add fuel to the fire. THEN i turned 13. I was going to a new school where no one knew me. Not only that, but that past summer i lost all kinds of weight(NOT that being overweight is bad, i just got picked on constantly for it), got contacts, lost the braces and learned how to use hair product. I was excited. I could start fresh. I could have FRIENDS. Maybe now, people will like me. To secure this plan, i made a persona for myself. I took all those traits that the movies said people liked and adopted them. I was happy, funny, slightly rebellious and up for anything. It worked. Among my peers i was this brand new me that they all loved. At home or with adults though, i was still that quiet, pragmatic, introspective bookworm that wrote poetry and took long walks in the woods just to be alone with my thoughts. Parents loved me. They would always insist on giving me a ride home so that they could talk to me about their lives. To them, i was responsible. They always wanted me to “talk sense” into their kids, which i never did- i stayed out of family issues, though i always willing to listen to their problems. Over time, this new me got louder and louder. Eventually i lost myself. I was so worried that i would get bullied that i forgot who i was in my desparate attempts to avoid it. Now i am older and i have a family of my own and i am just now starting to discover who i really am and how much of me i hid from the world bc i was bullied for it. My sorting is still a little blurry but i feel so good right now. I feel secure and safe. I’ve never felt safe. Anyway, i learned that you shouldnt change yourself for anyone. Its your imperfections and quirks that make you who you are. They make you beautiful and embracing them will make you stronger. Thank you for reading!
