          When he first meets them, he is just leaving the CCG HQ. He is leaving, determined to be anywhere but there, when Hide calls out to him with a loud yell of “Nekiiii! Over here!”

          And so he turns towards the chill of Autumn wind, locks eyes with Hide for a brief second and sees them -- four of them, each with the most ridiculously colored hair. Orange, dark purple, green and blue -- four standing with Hide, and he is suspicious. He goes over anyway, steps carefully measured, and stops about two or three feet from them.

          Hide introduces them as the Quinx; Shirazu Ginshi, Urie Kuki, Mutsuki Tooru, and Yonebayashi Saiko. They are his new squad, their new squad. He knew they would be coming -- he was briefed on the Quinx. The CCG’s experiments on himself were used to create them.

          He takes one look at them, cold and calculating -- and walks away.

          The first time they go on a mission together -- all together -- he is angry with them. No, just with him. He is angry with Urie, and he makes it known with that daring glare, kakugan activated, kagune out and looking just like the thing Urie thought he was: a monster.

          He just glares, turns away and leaves the alleyway they had escaped into. Urie’s actions had put Hide in danger and that he cannot forgive. He disappears for four days after that, killing and consuming until all his anger is gone, and he is tired.

          He returns to the Chateau, and pays them no mind.

          The first time he speaks to them, it is Mutsuki’s birthday. He hasn’t said a word to any of the Quinx since they first met, even though they sometimes talk to him. Hide is frustrated with him for it, but he has nothing to say to them. He doesn’t want to even think about getting close to them.

          It’s when he is looking over the recent doctor reports that he notices the date. December 14th. He knows he decided not to get close to them, but this is one thing he decides can’t hurt. He goes out, buys the book, commissions the eye patch, and on the 14th of December, he sits in the Chateau’s living room and awaits the return of Hide and three of the Quinx from their lunch.

          He hears the door open, the others file in, and he stands and approaches Mutsuki. He holds out the present, and speaks the first words to one of them: “Happy birthday, Mutsuki-kun.”

          Mutsuki is shocked -- all of them are -- for Kaneki has been kind, has spoken and they weren’t expecting it. Mutsuki takes the wrapped present from him as Shirazu and Saiko gape and Hide gives a thumbs up. He doesn’t wait for Mutsuki to open it; he simply returns to his room.

          He didn’t mean to, but he opened up his heart for a fraction of a second, and that’s all it took for them to worm their way inside.
