Six of Crows- Chapter 23 (Leigh Bardugo)
Even when he isn't openly mean, Jesper's at least unpleasant, passive-aggressive...
He had been the one to fuck up his own life, and apparently can't conceive others might've encountred actual misfortune. As Wylan says- he has plenty of spine. He's just not being a dick for no particular reason. It's called common decency.
Wylan isn't only questioning the logic of Jesper's presence, he's able to correctly point out his hypocrisy, so he gets some prying in return. It's bizzare how Jesper feels entitled to details of Wylan's story, when refusing to offer even simple assurance.
"Don't worry, it's taken care of. We've thought about it."
He already knows Wylan't mind has to understand everything. And when the boy insists:
Jesper finds an excuse to shut him up, and immediately justifies it to himself:
And because Wylan's dumbly gay and desperate for every scrap of positive feedback from anyone, he's affected by mere hints of flirting, even though it's clad in more insults.
Is ~that~ supposed to be a compliment?!
Pathetic.
