An elegant woman of 1930s France
On January 11th 1999 the novelist and politician Naomi Mitchison died.
Naomi Mitchison is best known as a novelist and social commentator, but she also wrote and published poetry, much of which is rooted in her Scottish background. Her father was John Scott Haldane, a distinguished scientist based in Oxford, where Naomi Haldane grew up.
The Scottish connection remained important throughout her childhood, and she spent many summers at Cloan in Perthshire, the Haldanes’ family home. Although her formal education was limited, she was steeped in an environment of scientific and creative enquiry which influenced her entire life.Naomi wrote an amzing 111 books in her life as well as, 244 short stories, 286 poems and songs, 21 published plays and 18 unpublished as well as 714 articles printed.
She also contributed to TV and Radio as far back as 1930 on radio, the latest to feature her work was only last year on Radio three which focused on her science fiction work.Surely one of the most remarkable ladies in modern Scottish history she must have been some gal.
The Haldanes were noted for their eccentricities and Naomi was no different when asked on her 90th birthday if she had any regrets she answered “Yes, all the men I never slept with. Imagine!”
She died at Carradale, Kintyre, where she spent much of her adult life, on 11 January 1999 at the age of 101. She was cremated at the Clydebank crematorium in Glasgow on 16 January. The ashes were scattered at Carradale on the following day.
With Remembrance Sunday fast approaching it is fitting that we read Naomi’s poignant poem, Green Boughs, which laments her generation……..My young, dear friends are dead, All my own generation. Pity a youthless nation, Pity the girls unwed, Whose young lovers are dead. They came from the gates of birth To boyhood happy and strong, To a youth of glorious days, We give them honour and song, And theirs, theirs is the praise. But the old inherit the earth. They knew what was right and wrong, They were idealists, Clean minds, my friends, my friends! Artists and scientists, Their lives that should have been long! But everything lovely ends. They came from college or school, They did not falter or tire, But the old, the stupid had rule Over that eager nation, And all my own generation They have cast into the fire.
