This should not be a controversial statement:
The “bottom line” should not be profit. It should be serving and investing in the community.
Profit, especially if it is invested back into the company, may be a step toward being able to do so but it should be considered as such, not as the ultimate priority.
What does your company/business do to serve the community? Is it succeeding? Are your employees, as part of the community, doing well? Are you investing in them and in ways to further serve the community? Are your prices fair to buyers and your ability to continue to serve the community? Are the salaries of your upper management fair in comparison to front line workers? And yes, if there must be investors and stockholders then this should be the measure of success they hold a company to as well. They are investing in the community by investing in the company.
