@sockdooe, I apologize in advance if you're as clueless as I am, but I genuinely want to know.

What is the L/K "queerbait" I keep seeing people complain about? Did something major happen between Lance and Keith in seasons Five and Six-- like, they leaned in toward each other as if they were going to kiss only for it to be a gag/fake out?

I watched five seasons of this cartoon and saw absolutely no hint of anything baity with those characters.

Though I do see the validity in claims that fans were baited by Adam's significance in the show being hyped up

only for his actual role to not amount to much more than another means of hurting Shiro, this, in my opinion, is the closest the show got to genuinely baiting its audience:

There's no reason to animate Keith moving in for a hug this way, other than to give the impression that he was about to kiss Shiro like he's the fairytale prince to Shiro's Sleeping Beauty.

Continuing to interpret two teenaged boys butting heads and competing with each other as "sexual tension", even after, from what I read, the voice actor for one of those boys confirmed that his character is exclusively attracted to women, does not count as legitimate queerbaiting.

do you have any headcanons you like? i can think of a couple.

lance likes to sleep in but shiro is an early bird. so often shiro will wake lance up with the smell of freshly brewed coffee and breakfast cooking on the stove.

they work around the same area, so often they will have lunch together on their breaks. sometimes if shiro is having a particularly busy day, lance will stop by and bring him lunch so that he remembers to eat.

when they’re together, they’re inseparable and want to do everything together. but in times when they are apart, they are constantly messaging each other and telling each other everything about their day.

According to the Tumblr post I originally snagged it from, it's an early piece of promotional artwork, meant to depict Keith as the series's central character. Shiro is shoved into the background, presumably to illustrate that he was intended to fulfill a Doomed Mentor role.

#Correspondence.#sockdooe #Takashi Shirogane #Shiro #You're nothingness but shining and everywhere at once.#Allura #You're everything and everyone who is or ever was.#Hunk Garrett #Half-Galra White Savior Keith #Pidge Holt #Katie Holt #Lance McClain #Voltron: Legendary Defender #It IS a really nice piece with a ton of personality but I hate a lot of what it represents.#Specifically how Allura is just sort of thrown in there like an awkward Token Female when she's one of the most important people in the #entire series.#And of course the sidelining and eventual nerfing of Shiro because the writers simply HAD to get him out of the way to achieve their #desired team line-up.#Until they were delivered the ultimate reality check in the form of an order from the higher-ups that they couldn't permanently kill a #popular character who also happens to be a gay man #leaving them scrambling like the clowns they were to figure out how to reintegrate him into the story.#Then the voice actor for *their* 'Chosen One' had scheduling conflicts that made him unavailable to them for a significant chunk of time.#Call me petty but I call that karma.#If they hadn't been dead set on killing Shiro they could have avoided the entire ridiculous clone plot because he still would have been #a member of the team and easily able to step back into his previous role of Black Paladin had Steven Yeun's outside job commitments #unavoidably necessitated Keith being M.I.A. for a period.#But I expect too much of showrunners who couldn't handle having a disabled main lead and exploited his sexuality for internet brownie #points despite having every intention of killing him and keeping him dead.

@sockdooe, I think that person was attempting to argue, with some exceptionally odd choice of words, that Sheith shippers are "nasty", because Shiro and Keith first met when Keith was a child. I assumed, based on the seven year age-difference and the fact that Shiro and Adam were cohabitating and headed toward engagement, that Shiro was at least twenty-one and Keith was fourteen and a high school freshman, when Shiro came out to Keith's school.

Not Shiro eighteen and Keith twelve.

Steven Yeun's voice was pitch-shifted in the flashbacks, but not enough to suggest that Keith hadn't even started puberty, yet. And, I don't think even fictional military academies recruit middle schoolers to be communications experts, data analysts, engineers, and pilots.

The majority of Shiro/Keith shippers only ship them in the context of both of them being legal adults, anyway, so I thought we were largely past the Keith/Shiro shippers are "pedophiles", angle.

Evidently not.

I guess I was giving this fandom too much credit.
