I LIVE
Now don't get crazy, no new update, but I simply had to come back to life in order to share this with you all.
SOMEONE MADE A DOUJINSHI OF THE FIC.
This is not a drill a real doujinshi has been made and you can find it online for free! The art is sublime and really highlights the darkness of my fic, this is more than I could ever ask and I thank you all, this would not be possible without you.
You can find the link here:
https://twitter.com/ozukofan/status/1482408163215384587
This would not be possible without @ozukofan, who made this possible and regularly shares a lot of great content Zuko content, they're the nicest person and you should head there and say thanks cause I can't say it enough to them!
In an effort to say thanks, I have decided to try and get ready an update ready for this month, it's the least I can do.
Things have been getting better for me, so I hope to achieve this.
Again, thank you so much for your support y'all! Support the artist as well! Hopefully I'll see you all in AO3 soon!

lol. chapter 3 is up but given that it's been well over a year I'm just going to link to chapter 1 bc I'm assuming people are going to want to reread
the wonderlandians in ever after, when asked, don’t call themselves girls. they come from a place where gender is inconsequential. there’s no need for it. it’s not in their language. there are no kings; queens are not women, just the rulers of a kingdom. when they come to ever after, they use she and her, because that’s what people call them. they dress the same: skirts and heels and eyeliner. it doesn’t make a difference. when I say the wonderlandians are nonbinary I don’t mean they separate themselves from gender. I mean they delight in femininity the way a kid plays with a doll. it’s fictional, made up, something to parade around. are you a girl? one asks. oh, I’m a girl, the other one says, smiling, the sarcasm etched around the edges. it’s a game to them. and oh, how the wonderlandians love their games.

sigh. saw a post that made me mad. time to Apple character study.
you are eight years old and you look death in the eyes for the first time. she is something that has been hidden from you, for a long time; after all, you grew up in a castle, hidden away in bright colors and soft things. but when death finds you, she is gentle. your legs are tired from swimming and your fingers are scraped up from clawing at the bricks and when she pulls you out of the well, you can hear your servants calling from the distance.
you know the reason why you did not die there. you didn’t die because you weren’t meant to. not yet. so you’ve planned it. you know when you’ll see her again; the time spent under the apple, you’ve planned it down to your dreams. you know your story. you know it intimately. as long as you follow the lines of it, death does not lurk around the corners. she does not reach out to snag your clothes.
the second time you see death is when a careless girl, who does not know death, stands on a pedestal and tears a page out of a book. the book is a nonissue. in the years to come, no one else will see that. it’s not about the magic. it’s about the legacy. the girl, with a page in her hand, shakes as she breathes. she believes she’s seen death for the first time.
but she couldn’t have. of course she couldn’t have. death is wearing her face.
