Quantum Break/Control: The End of Time

Poster’s Note: I just finished my second playthrough of Quantum Break, and it has inspired me to expand upon my Alan Wake/Quantum Break/Control storyline. This post will be focusing upon Quantum Break and Control; sorry to disappoint any Alan Wake fans out there. The Junctions for this story are: PR, Personal, Sofia Amaral, and Control.

Shortly after November 11, 2016, the day of Jack’s interview with Clarice Ogawa and his refusal of Martin Hatch’s offer, there is a Stutter. In a panic, Jack tells William and they realize the truth: Utilizing the Countermeasure as they did just postpone the End of Time; the Fracture is still ongoing. It’s far less powerful now, taking just over four year to culminate in the End of Time rather than a single day. Paul was right; there is no stopping the End of Time.

Out of the blue, Sofia Amaral makes contact with them. With Paul out of the picture, she’s been kicked out of Monarch and her research confiscated. She doesn’t believe that Hatch is going to continue in Paul’s footsteps, and Jack has to agree. He calls Amy Ferraro and Fiona Miller in to talk about what they know.

Meeting in an out of the way place, away from Monarch’s eyes and ears, Jack, Will, Sofia, Amy, and Fiona meet to discuss what they know. From all the tidbits of information that Jack has gathered and their time spent at Monarch, they figure out the truth: Martin Hatch is a Shifter.

For unknown reasons, he turned Dr. Kim into a Shifter and manipulated events within Monarch so that the Fracture would happen and so that Paul would become a Shifter too. With Monarch and its assets under his and Clarice Ogawa’s control, there’s nothing to stop him from making sure the End of Time happens.

The five of them make a pact, to stop Martin Hatch and keep the clocks from stopping for good. Fiona will continue to work at Monarch and serve as the group’s inside source. Amy will keep organizing protests against Monarch and recruit more people against it. Sofia and Will’s part will be to repair the Countermeasure to one day power the Lifeboat, and to research and produce treatments for Jack’s Chronon Syndrome. As for Jack himself, he’ll be the group’s source of funding. Someone with his skills and abilities would make a killing in the mercenary field.

In very late 2019 or very early 2020, Jack and Will come into contact with the Federal Bureau of Control and its new Director, Jesse Faden, during an AWE in Bright Falls. Under its last Director, Zachariah Trench, the FBC was working with Monarch Solutions (while it was under Paul Serene) to help the latter with the Lifeboat.

Jesse learns the truth about what’s going on at Monarch with Martin Hatch in charge. She and the Joyce Brothers come up with a new version of the Lifeboat program. By making the outside of the Oldest House stutterproof, they would also be making its much larger interior stutterproof as well, allowing for far more than just 300 people in inhabit it while they come up with a solution to the End of Time.

Once the FBC’s ranks have been replenished, Jesse and Jack lead a raid upon Monarch Solutions with Liam Burke’s assistance, grabbing every bit of chronon technology and research that they can, including Paul’s time machine. Both Jesse and Jack face off against Martin Hatch and “kill” him; his body disappears in the aftermath.

Back in New York City, the FBC starts a massive recruitment drive, looking for the best and brightest of the world to populate the Oldest House (including the former employees of Monarch). With the threat of the Hiss removed from its premises, the Oldest House will make for an Ark once it’s been stutterproofed. While Sofia and Will work with Emily Pope to “dumb” down their technology for the Oldest House, and with Simon Arish to prepare the FBC Rangers for combat against Shifters.

Meanwhile, Jack and Jesse start getting close. While Jack was originally hesitant about acting on his attraction to Jesse due to her resemblance to Beth Wilder, he’s come to know her far better than he ever did with Beth. While he’ll always have a place in his heart for Beth, it’s time for him to let go of the past.

As the End of Time approaches, the stutters get exponentially worse and worse. It’s during this time that Clarice Ogawa and others loyal to Martin Hatch make their move, attempting to sabotage the Ark. Thankfully, Jack, Jesse, and their allies are able to stop them. Despite their victory, Jack’s Chronon Syndrome progressively worsens.

On January 5th, 2021, the End of Time is fast approaching. Jack’s Chronon Syndrome is reaching its final stage, threatening to send him into rage-and-pain fueled rampage through the Oldest House. Jesse confronts him outside of the Oldest House, wearing a Chronon Harness. Martin Hatch, Dr. Kim, and Paul Serene are fast approaching, and Jack is on the verge of becoming a Shifter himself.

Tears falling down her face, Jesse tells that she’s pregnant with his child. Coming to for just a moment, Jack realizes the danger that Jesse is in and tells her to run. As Jesse runs towards the Old House, the End of Time finally upon them all, Jack turns and in the moment before Shifter-hood takes him, makes one last stand against the Shifters to protect Jesse and his child.

An instant later, time resumes moving. As the members of the Human race pick themselves up, wondering at the sudden destruction and death around them, a crowd begins walking out of the Oldest House. At their end is Jesse Faden, Director of the FBC, and aged about twenty more years. At her side is a young man, her son, Jack Joyce, Jr., the spitting image of his father.

They did it; they fixed the Fracture and jumpstarted Time. All around Jesse and Jack, their friends walk out into the world, surrounded by the children they had while weathering the storm in the Ark. Much has been lost, but the world continues on once again, and while Humanity as a whole will never know it, it owes them all a great debt of gratitude.
