Meetings Part 2
Cassie Salazar x Soldier!Reader

She couldn’t believe she was doing this. It wasn’t exactly her first option. The “tax” that you had collected from the other soldiers was going to help Cassie keep the lights on, food in the fridge and pay for at least half a vial of insulin. But at the same time, Cassie needed more than half a vial.
It wasn’t by any means a good idea but she was desperate. The idea of getting married to a soldier just to get the medical benefits would’ve appalled her a few weeks ago but the dangerously low insulin vial was an all too frightening sight for her.
If she was going to do this, she needed to do it with someone she trusted.
She made her way to Frankie’s apartment and knocked nervously on the door.
You woke up in Frankie’s guest bedroom with a slight buzz in your skull. Maybe you got a little tipsy last night. But the only thing that was buzzing in your mind more than the hangover was Cassie. Her smile, her voice, her personality. You wished you could see her again.
And then you heard it. Her voice. You heard Frankie’s too.
Cassie was explaining this ludicrous plan of hers to your best friend. You nearly walked in trying to put a stop to it. But then you heard about her need for the insulin. Cassie seemed sweet and a little headstrong, your exact type.
Cassie finished giving the layout of the plan, “I know this sounds crazy but…I really need your help. It’s strictly platonic”
Frankie sighed, “I got a girl, Cass. I’m…I’m gonna propose to her” he pulled out a small simple ring from his pocket.
Cassie’s heart both broke and soared. On one hand she was happy that the kid she once looked after had found love but the other, she was up a creek again.
“He’s taken but I’m not” you said softly as you walked into the small living room, offering Cassie a gentle smile, “hey”
“H-hey” she answered softly.
You and Cassie found yourselves talking over the logistics of the plan over breakfast at a local diner.
“So we’ll just keep it simple” Cassie surmised
“We met at your bar. I saw you playing a gig and we’ve been dating under the radar for a few months” you shrug.
“Yeah” she bit her lip, “thank you.”
“Insulin shouldn’t be a problem for you to acquire. Plain and simple”
“That’s a lot of work you’re putting in for someone you barely know” Cassie stares into your eyes.
“You’re a friend to Frankie. He’s like family to me” you let out a small sigh, “and…I don’t have anyone in my life”
A small sad smile made its way across Cassie’s face.
“So…I take it no kids then” you tried to joke to change the mood. You never really liked bringing up the lack of a family. You only truly found it when you became friends with Frankie.
Cassie rolled her eyes at your little remark. She saw right thru your poor attempt at changing the subject. She reached across the table and took your hand. “You’re not alone”
You could only give her a nod. Your eyes wander around the diner until something catches your eye.
“Have you ever dreamed of what song you wanted for your wedding?” You asked her softly.
Cassie let out a soft chuckle, “what?”
“Just humor me,” you give her a smile, “if you could have one song, what would it be?”
Cassie blushes, “you’re gonna think I’m a hopeless romantic but…Perfect by Ed Sheeran”
You quickly get up and run to the nearby object of that caught your eye - a jukebox. You fished out a couple dollar bills and fed them in.
Cassie kept an eye on you, still unsure of what you were up to.
I found a love for me
Oh, darling, just dive right in and follow my lead
Well, I found a girl, beautiful and sweet
Oh, I never knew you were the someone waitin' for me
You walked with a stride back up to Cassie and held out your hand, “may I have this dance?”
Cassie blushes and takes your hand, joining you in the middle of that diner.
Baby, I'm dancin' in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass while listenin' to our favourite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, "Darling, you look perfect tonight"
The two of you swayed together to the song. You held her close and didn’t want to let this singer go. Her hazel eyes locked on yours.
For a split second, Cassie had forgotten that this was all an act. For one brief moment, Cassie felt that she had found someone. Someone who would never let her down, all be there for her.
As the song ended, several patrons broke the silence and began applauding the two of you. Cassie offered a slightly embarrassed bow to the crowd as you held her hand.
“That’s my girl,” you said with a small smile, “we’re getting married soon”
The crowd cheered louder and Cassie hid her face a little bit more.
Maybe this marriage would work after all.
