The magic of Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is amazing!
I can't think of another setting that exemplifies how a soft magic system works in service to the story better.
Dreamfasting is introduced as a way to share memories. Allowing accurate communication of events since one cannot lie in a Dreamfast. It's a very intimate aspect of Gelfling culture. It isn't big or flashy but it is sacred. Because it comes from Thra itself.
As do all forms of magic in the Dark Crystal.
This spiritual aspect of magic lends itself to the themes it's portraying. The Darkening is a corruption of Thra's energy. And if the world itself is sick it only stands to reason that the life it sustains follows. In effect, the power of the Darkening is just as much "of Thra" as Dreamfasting. A physical manifestation of the Skeksis' abuse and neglect.
Mother Aughra is the avatar of Thra, the embodiment of a god in physical form. So her ability to pull multiple Gelfling into the Dream Space while they are Dreamfasting doesn't break the established rules but expands on them. As she is Thra and Dreamfasting comes from her.
Her immortality is a part of her nature. So long as Thra continues Mother Aughra will live. So, instead of focusing on her resurrection the story draws tension from whether or not she will arrive in time to save one of the protagonists.
I wanted this to be more coherent but anyway Age of Resistance being cancelled is a crime and I still have feelings about it.
