"When I was asked to write a piece for the World Sleep Day Playlist, I thought I would take inspiration from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which are based on a ground, a recurring chord pattern throughout all the variations. They were originally commissioned by the Ambassador of Saxony for Goldberg to play for him during sleepless nights when he was ill or suffering from insomnia. So I started with this very simple, beautiful chord sequence. I went to record it in my house late at night, so it’s played as quietly as possible so as not to wake my two year old daughter."
