SOI pre-release junk!!!

Hello all! I'm super excited to get to go over some of my pulls from this last weekend and the SHADOWS OVER INNASTRAD pre-release!!! Let me start by saying I have been pumped up for this since I found out we were returning to Innastrad. I began playing magic in Dark Assention any my first pre-release was Avacyn restored. So last weekend was an awesome one for team Benz-Rogers. In the midnight release I pulled a promo avacyn and a regular one plus an Arlinn Kordd, and not much else. I didn't have much synergy with my commons and uncommon so I just played red green white beat down. Aparetly avacyn is the real mvp because I won every game I saw her but not many besides. My SO also pulled an Arlinn and some a westvale Abbey. Guys.. Westvale Abbey is limited good. Like it's a problem. I only got to play in the mindnight release and in the Sunday 6pm two headed giant tournament. Please note I freaking love two headed giant. I opened 2 gitrog monsters and a deathcap cultivator so I ran green black while my SO played red white burny-bouncy-stuffs. Our game 1 was against a newbie father son team where the son was about 6. He played startled awake on my SO and was able to get it out as a creature then back to his hand. Both of us thought we were fucked. Thank God he targeted me the next time he played it! After we won the game I told them about targeting the same player both times to mill out the team. Later in the night they played a team we beat and milled them out! Take away: startled awake is not horrible. We like to open our prize support in bed together and Chance got 3rd at midnight, 4th at Saturday 1pm, 1st at Sunday 1pm and we got 1st as a team at Sunday 6pm so we had quite a bit of support to open. Pulled a 3rd avacyn and a whole bunch of good vampires, including 2 Olivias and a falkenrath gorger. We also have over the course of the weekend ended up with like 6 harness the storms. Holy shit those are terrible. Like if you need them I guess you can have them. Tl;dr...my SO played really well and we got a bunch of good stuff including: 3x Archangel Avacyn 2x Arlinn Kordd 2x Olivia, Mobilized for War 2x Gitrog Monster

OKAY SO, my 2HG prerelease event!

I rounded up my friend Luke, who hasn’t played mtg in about 2 years, and convinced him to be my teammate. The combined pool included a Sigarda, Avacyn, Sorin, Season’s Past, and Westvale Abbey. I end up going G/W with a human subtheme, splashing black for Sorin. That’s right, 4 mythics. The deck also contained 2 Silver Strikes, 2 Humble the Brutes, and 3 Rabid Bites. For my friend, I ALMOST built a U/B zombie deck, but noticed at the last second that we had the tools to make a crazy U/G investigate mill deck, with 3 Vessels of Paramnesia and 2 Fleeting Memories, plus a LOT of investigate spells.

So there they are, “Abzan’s Last Stand” and “Something’s Fucky”

We actually won two games by mill while my humans and spirit tokens gummed up the board, though Luke claimed that those wins “didn’t feel honorable”, hehehe.

The game that we won by damage actually ended with our life total of over 100. It was explosive. While Luke used his spells for disruption and board stability, I built my mana base with my 2 Warped Landscapes, and eventually played a Silver Strike, Sigarda (died) and Sorin (also died). Then I drop Season’s Past and the other team’s jaws dropped with it. Silver Strike, Sigarda, and Sorin all back to hand. Next turn, untap, drop Sorin. Opponents think I’ve gone mad by dropping him without means to protect him. On their turn, they swing out. Luke butts in with an Engulf the Shore on 7 islands. They can’t rebuild in time to prevent Sorin’s ult. We get 27 Vampires, then I sac 5 of them to awaken Ormendhal. A turn later I give the team +1/+1 and go in with 22 2/2 lifelink vampires and a 10/8 Ormendhal. Game. It felt like EDH.

In every match, everyone was in good spirits and had a lot of fun. My friend had a good time and wants to play a little more magic now, and the prize packs were fun to open.

With a really crappy white blue spirit deck. Turns out 1/5 flyers are really strong in this format.

Over heard at the shop -SOI Prerelease edition

So here's my prerelease deck from yesterday. I was debating between going U/W or U/R. I had some decent spirits in U/W and Rattlechains but not a lot of removal. I had some red removal spells but not a lot besides that. I knew I would be going U/X because of the Jace that I opened. I settled on Jeskai because it was the best of both worlds. I ended up going 0-2 drop. It's not because I lost both and then dropped because I was mad, I went with some friends and they wanted to leave after two rounds. Out of the four of us two of us opened the new Jace (the other one was a promo Jace) and the other two opened Olivia, Mobilized for War. For two of my friends it was their very first prerelease and then had a lot of fun and got some sweet cards out of it. All in all, 10/10 will play again.

Undefeated!

I went to my lgs for the prerelease this afternoon. I got some great cards, and was able to talk with @chandra-nalaar during matches. It's the best experience I've had at a prerelease in a while. The matches were great, though I misplayed during my third match and that stuck with me for the rest of the game. I managed to come back from it. In fact, even with two mulligans I still won a game. I was knocked down to 10 and had no board presence, but finally got my mana fixed and turned it all around. The final match when to three rounds and we had a good challenge. I was offered to split the packa, but I don't feel comfortable with that, and they were cool with playing it out. I ended up having to lend three packs out because the shop ran out of boosters (I'm not sure how that happened) so I'll be picking up three more next friday at the release. It was a good night. I'm going tomorrow, too.

SOI Prerelease(midnight) 6-0 First place Built a pretty solid R/B deck that played pretty heavily with both Madness and Transform. The deck felt more mono red with a splash of black for removal. Playing with Madness was both very fun and very strong. Lightning Axe into a madness spell always felt good. On the play with a T3 Bloodmad Vampire into T4 Voldaren Duelist was one of my stronger plays. Call the Bloodline was a bonkers card. Turning extra lands into 1/1 lifelinkers was just the best, more so if you ditched a madness card to it. Delirium ended up feeling like a trap, I kept my one of Kindly Stranger in for the removal, but sadly never got a chance to flip her. Over all had a really good time.
