Burning that Midnight Prerelease Oil
First of all, I went to a midnight prerelease at my usual store. Secondly, my promo was Midnight Oil. Third, I did not actually light Midnight Oil on fire.
To begin, my pulls were Midnight Oil (yes I had 2 in my pool), Paradoxical Outcome, Syndicate Trafficker, Master Tinkereer, Multiform Wonder, and Combustible Gearhulk.
Looking at my pool, I had a clear package. Temur Energy. Most of my Green produced Energy. I had the Thriving Turtle and Grubs. Era of Innovation and Fabrication Module. The beautiful tiger. Harnessed Lightning and several other burn spells. Here is my Temur Energy Decklist.
Chandra's Pyrohelix Disappearing Act Thriving Grubs Servant of the Conduit Era of Innovation Prophetic Prism Sage of Shaila's Claim Take Down Riparian Tiger Harnessed Lightning Fabrication Module Thriving Turtle Woodweaver's Puzzleknot Spark of Creativity Attune with Aether x2 Renegade Tactics x2 Wielding Sparks x2 Select for Inspection x2 Multiform Wonder Combustible Gearhulk Mountain x6 Forest x5 Island x5
Went 3-3. After round 3 I found I was missing two cards in my deck. Don’t know if they were missing the whole round or not. They were just lands. But I might have played with an illegal deck, and could’ve gone 4-2 that night. Just something to remember next time.
The deck played really well overall. Lost to Rakdos Aggro Burn, I forget the other two decks. I remember the Rakdos Aggro Burn because that lucky son-of-a-bitch pulled a Chandra and used her both games. I managed to counter her the second game, but still lost the round. Another round that I lost had a really good game one. Opened perfectly. By perfectly I mean I had at least two of my colors, one was a Forest and I had Attune with Aether in my hand. On turn 3 had boomed to 9 Energy. I was beaten down to 2 Life, but got Multiform Wonder out and stabilized. His only flier was a 2/3 skiff. Meanwhile I had a threatening tiger out with counters growing on it. They went for a big swing, I lost the Wonder. I was holding Pyrohelix for a couple turns, then I top decked Welding Sparks. They had a 3/3 human and Padeem, Consul of Innovation for blockers and sitting at 5 Life. Go in for the kill, with a 5/5 trampling tiger. Double block for total of 7 toughness. Welding Sparks Padeem, I had Fabrication Module out so perfect 4 damage to kill her. Pyrohelix the 3/3 to bring it down to 1 toughness. Activate the Module to make an Energy, putting a +1/+1 counter on the tiger, to do 5 trample damage. Lost game 2. Game three switched to my second deck and lost the round.
Yes, I made two decks for the prerelease. Temur Energy was my main and it served me well. I also had an Orzhov deck. It wasn’t as strong. Was built around control and vehicles. Lack of 1-drops and stronger removal made it rely on landing dudes and hitting harder than the opponent.
I had a grand experience as usual when I’m able to stay the whole night. I am a little bitter that I passed down a kit that had both Chandra and Dovin. I’m certain 9 out of the 60 players pulled a Chandra. I think there was about 5 Kaladesh Inventions. I don’t think anyone pulled Saheeli. I bought the Chandra deck to make sure my Chandra tribal wouldn’t fall too far behind. Pulled Padeem and Verdurous Gearhulk. A little sad that none of my friends were there. Managed to make some acquaintances, but nothing substantial. Still, first time I went by myself, which meant driving by myself and staying up til 7am to drive myself back. That was my Kaladesh midnight prerelease. I will get my Chandra, Torch of Defiance for my Chandra Tribal.
Midnight Prerelease
Finally have some time to update about my midnight prerelease. In my opinion opened up a pretty lackluster pool, was able to put together a decent g/w control deck. Good amount of removal and a few big beaters backed up by some fabricate creatures. Only playable rare was Angel of Invention. Ended up 4-1-1, taking second place after cutting to top 8. So over all not a bad night, just an unexciting pool.
SOI Prerelease(midnight) 6-0 First place Built a pretty solid R/B deck that played pretty heavily with both Madness and Transform. The deck felt more mono red with a splash of black for removal. Playing with Madness was both very fun and very strong. Lightning Axe into a madness spell always felt good. On the play with a T3 Bloodmad Vampire into T4 Voldaren Duelist was one of my stronger plays. Call the Bloodline was a bonkers card. Turning extra lands into 1/1 lifelinkers was just the best, more so if you ditched a madness card to it. Delirium ended up feeling like a trap, I kept my one of Kindly Stranger in for the removal, but sadly never got a chance to flip her. Over all had a really good time.
